I greatly enjoyed my time in the Department of Biological Safety at UK! My primary mission in this role was to ensure research safety in work with biohazards for faculty, staff, students, and visitors, as well as compliance with all applicable statutes and regulations relating to biohazardous research safety. My job involved...- Providing subject matter expertise to Primary Investigators (PI's) and administrators relative to National Institute of Health (NIH), Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), & other pertinent regulatory agencies. - Reviewing Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) protocols, scientific literature, and other research related documents to address hazard usage and safety concerns. - Troubleshooting and regular use of a custom TOPAZ Elements software package, designed to streamline protocol submission and approval.- Conducting audits of research facilities.- Documenting and maintaining audit reports in the University of Kentucky BioRaft software package.

Working at UK in the Markey Cancer Center was incredible. My day-to-day work consisted of managing research labs. As a Pharmaceutical Technician at Catalent, I had a chance to practice Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP's) and to learn about how detailed, clean, and efficient the process of manufacturing pharmaceuticals is. IEH was an excellent opportunity for me. I started as a bench technician and worked my way into the director's role. As the lab director, I oversaw expansion of our operations and improved business relations at the lab. I made personal growth and learned the importance of good lab practices. This job required careful maintenance of the customer's private information and improved my listening, comprehension, and verbal skills on-the-phone, as I worked with a variety of people -- different age groups and ethnicities -- from all across the United States.
