A voice for children since 1960, The Skillman Foundation works to ensure that Detroit youth have access to high-quality educational and economic opportunities and a strong, broad network of champions that work on behalf of young people’s interests.As the Communications Fellow, my job was to craft and implement strategies to share, market and grow the Foundation’s impact through digital and print platforms. I was responsible for managing and creating written, video and photo content for the organization’s social media channels and website. I also assisted in the management the My Brother's Keeper Detroit Innovation Challenge, a $500,000 funding initiative focused on creating opportunity for young people of color in Detroit. My responsibilities frequently require me to work closely in collaboration with local nonprofit organizations, community members, and youth across Detroit.

Grand Circus is a tech training institute offering computer coding bootcamps and one of seven Google for Entrepreneurs tech hubs in North America, serving as a platform for start-ups and established organizations to connect.As the marketing intern, I managed the company’s Twitter and Instagram accounts, generating daily creative content, and produced monthly blogs on tech, startup, and local business-related topics. I also developed, designed, and implemented two student recruitment campaigns, exceeding enrollment goals by 25%.

The University of Michigan’s Information and Technology Services Department manages the campus’ computer labs and offers technology support to students and faculty. During my time with the department, I assisted an average of 15 customers per hour with computer repairs while also managing the operation and upkeep of the largest computer lab on campus.

MREACH provides career enrichment, academic preparation, and hands-on business activities for high school students from underrepresented backgrounds. As a student leader, I developed and delivered the program’s curriculum to 60+ students per month, preparing them for college-level marketing, accounting, and finance classes. I also coordinated 10 high recruiting visits to high schools across Southeast Michigan, increasing program participating by 200%.

LEADership, Education, and Development (LEAD) is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit organization providing business-focused summer programs for youth.During my summer as a resident advisor, I supervised 30 rising high school seniors during their 4-week course while also providing mentorship in their college and career planning process. Additionally, I helped to facilitate on and off-campus office visits, allowing the youth to build connections with representatives at Google, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Exxon Mobile.

In my second summer, I also trained and mentored two new interns, leading to heightened understanding of company culture and strengthened team performance.

Offering over 15 yearly activities, the University of Michigan’s intramural sports program provides students an opportunity to play in a competitive, yet safe, environment.As an intramural referee, I was responsible for resolving rule infractions by players and calling penalties when necessary to minimize argumentative confrontation and ensure participant safety. I also managed playing surfaces, equipment, and game schedules for 20+ nightly activities ensuring student satisfaction and program efficiency.
