Assistant Professor
I am an assistant professor in the Department of Plastic Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. My lab focuses on 1) valorize plastic waste into useful products, including pristine polymers, fuels, specialty chemicals, and monomers. 2) investigate the microplastic-environment-health interaction and develop characterization tools for.
Postdoctoral Researcher
- Developing grant application materials to NSF-CBET (Environmental Engineering), NSF-DCL (Growing Convergence Research), DOE, National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIBML), Environmental.
- Coordinated potential collaborations with ExxonMobil, Plastics Industry Association, Eli Lilly, Cabot Microelectronics, Chevron Phillips Chemical, Kairo Venture Capital, EREMA, and Greater Innovations, LLC., to treat.
- Dissolute/re-precipitate plastics wastes in multiple organic solvents with the guidance of Hansen solubility sphere
- Develop protocols to separate and characterize polyethylene or polypropylene from polyolefin binary mixtures
- Develop tubular reactor systems to convert polyolefin waste into clean fuels under supercritical fluids
- Conduct lifecycle assessment and technoeconomic analyses of different plastic waste treatment technologies
Research Assistant
- Upgrading biocrude oil converted from wet biowaste into transportation fuels by 1) ultrasonically-assisted solvent extraction, 2) Thermal cracking, hydrotreating, and hydrocracking with catalysts under.
- Conducting diesel engine tests to understand the combustion characteristics and emissions from HTL-biofuel through cooperation with Prof. Chia-Fon Lee’s group at Department of Mechanical Engineering in UIUC
- Characterized the fuel specs of HTL-biofuels converted from wet biowastes and compared them to petro-fuels
- Operated hydrothermal reactors (micro, bench, and pilot scales) to produce biocrude oil and valuable bio-gas from algae, swine manure, food processing wastes, slaughtering waste, newspaper waste, waste plastics, egg.
- Characterized biocrude oil, aqueous products, solid residue, gas products, and catalysts via elemental analysis, GC, GC-MS, TGA, FTIR, ICP-OES, SEM/EDS, and BET surface analysis
- Value-added chemical separation (e.g. fatty acids and nitrogen-containing compounds) from the biocrude oil converted from biowaste and algae by Soxhlet and ultrasonically-assisted extraction
