Profile bio

About Xabier Idiondo Goñi

Graduate in both Industrial and Space Engineering. In the field of space, trained in spacecraft systems engineering with a special focus on propulsion, GNC, and ADCS. In the field of the Indutrial engineering, specialized in thermal engineering with deep knowledge in thermal cycles, combustion, thermal engines, tubomachinery, and fluidic engineering. Space passionate since the three years participation in BiSKY Team student association, working on hybrid propulsion systems for a suborbital launcher. I worked there in the dimensioning of the key components of the engines and in CFD calculations of the combustion of the engine. My degree thesis was also oriented in CFD doing a research on liquid injection simulations. Along the six months experience in ITP Arero a first version of a 5.5 kN hybrid rocket engine was done, starting from the dimensioning of the main components of the engine to perform the main fluidic and mechanical simulations. The six months experience in MaiaSace working on fluid modelization gave me a strong background on cryogenic propellants handling and modelling, using EcosimPro software.

Propulsion Analysis Engineer

Elche, Valencian Community, Spain

Stage Analyst, in charge of the fluid and thermal analysis of the launcher stages using EcosimPro software. Among the principal duties, to perform simulations at a system level and develop the launcher pressurization system of the propellant tanks for the mission. I have also performed thermal analysis on the cryogenic tanks, allowing to dimension the liquid heating and its boiling for the venting system. As a stage analyst, I do also work on the definition of the main subsystems that conform the stage, as the RCS, the high pressure vessels, the tank venting systems, the pressurization system, or the main stage feed lines.

Fluidic Ground Segment Engineer

Paris, Île-De-France, France

Completed a 5-month internship as part of my final MSc thesis in Astronautics and Space Engineering.During this experience, I conducted fluid modeling of the ground segment using Ecosimpro and Matlab software. The primary focus of my work was to extract crucial information regarding the launcher's filling sequence in order to predict performance and optimize all operations. To achieve this, I performed transient simulations in the Ecosimpro software to predict key variables related to the launcher's tank cooling, filling, boil-off, and pressurization processes. This internship provided me with valuable experience in handling cryogenic fluids and familiarized me with the tank filling procedures and operations. Additionally, I received official Ecosimpro software training from Empresarios Reunidos.

Propulsion Systems Engineer

Bilbao-Bilbo, País Vasco / Euskadi, España

Intership completed in collaboration with BiSKY Team student association with the objective of developing a preliminary design for a 5.5 kN thrust hybrid rocket motor.During this experience, I began by dimensioning the three main components of the engine to meet the thrust and test-stand requirements: the Engine Injector, Nozzle, and fuel grain main dimensions. Based on the previous engine designs from BiSKY Team, a new iteration of the CAD design was performed to incorporate the new calculations.A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model of the combustion was also created to calculate and visualize the internal behavior of the motor, as well as the heating of the components due to the hot gases flowing through them. Finite Element Method (FEM) calculations for the two primary engine subsystems (pre and post-combustion chambers) were conducted to predict the thermal and mechanical loads on these key components. Using the information from the CFD and FEM calculations, a new iteration of the CAD design was executed to simplify the system and create a more robust engine design capable of withstanding greater thermal and mechanical loads. Finally, a detailed study was conducted to select the most suitable bolted joints and design the O-Ring grooves to ensure the engine's proper sealing.

Propulsion Team Member

Bilbao, País Vasco / Euskadi, España

Worked in the development of two hybrid rocket motors. The first version was a 50 N hybrid rocket motor that we successfully manufactured and tested. I was involved in the development of various components, including the injector, the oxidizer feeding system, and the composition and manufacture of the fuel grain.Subsequently, I worked on the second version of the engine with a 5 kN thrust. My responsibilities included dimensioning and designing the feeding system by selecting the essential elements required for the system. I also contributed to the development of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations to analyze the combustion process within the engine. This allowed us to obtain key parameters such as pressure and temperature profiles inside the combustion chamber, enabling us to predict the engine's performance.Additionally, for my final degree thesis, I conducted a research on CFD of the liquid oxidizer injection inside the combustion chamber. This liquid suffers an atomization and evaporation due to the hot gas environment before combustion occurred with the stored fuel inside the chamber.

Oct 2018 - Jul 2022

Chief Propulsion

Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain

I was elected by my colleagues to lead a group of 8 people and serve as a member of a 50-student association's directing board for an academic year. I maintained direct communications with sponsor and supplier companies for sponsorship contract negotiations and the manufacture of motor components, respectively. I also managed a 15,000 Euro budget for the propulsion department.Throughout the year, I led and coordinated colleagues in the propulsion department during a hybrid rocket motor testing campaign, successfully achieving 3 valuable tests to collect experimental data while ensuring the safety of the entire testing process. Additionally, we made progress in the manufacturing process of the 5kN engine, which had already been designed in previous years. We also continued our research on key elements such as injectors to improve future tests and fuel production.
