About Xavier Davis

A passionate engineer with over 15 years professional working experience; including 7 years working in the Autonomous Vehicle industry, 4 years working with autonomous locomotives, and 4 years working in a fast paced manufacturing environment.Serving the role of Controls Software Design Engineer, I came up with concept designs for new feature requests, turned them into requirements, drove them through reviews and risk analysis with stakeholders, wrote the validation plan, held code reviews to ensure the implementation was correct, executed the validation plan, and then went out to the field to test and collect data. I analyzed data from field tests and other data from customer concerns, root caused issues, and addressed them with hot fixes. I then decided to change the pace and become a controls engineer in a manufacturing environment where I quickly troubleshooted production issues and led projects to increase efficiency or implement engineering change requests. I also led the controls aspects of the re-tooling of a production line to go from manufacturing one product to another. Next I decided to enter the AV industry where I found an even deeper passion. I served as lead subsystem validation engineer and was responsible for validating the functional and intended safety requirements of several key subsystems on the host vehicle side of the AV. Here I was involved in the bring up of our system bench and was a key driver for many milestones such as the first time we were able to autonomously shift, brake, and steer, CAN bus / internal variable manipulation, fault injection testing, diagnostics, HIL simulation / script automation, traceability, and several best practices for validation. I decided to challenge myself and find new areas of growth as a Systems Test Engineer and become much more heavily involved with the AV stack; working closely with software engineers to design test plans and test strategies for new features, executing tests, and triaging simulation and road data to verify the expected results or root cause issues. I also worked closely with software architecture engineers on sim framework development and served as creator & tech lead for a new variant of an automated road data parser. I had the opportunity to lead a team of engineers on several other test creation initiatives and served as STE lead of our high speed enablement test strategy. My new journey begins with NVIDIA where I will strive to continue to push the autonomous industry forward in a safe and meaningful manner.

Listed skills include Engineering, Six Sigma, Manufacturing, Engineering Management, and 11 others.

Controls Engineer - Trip Optimizer - Planner Subsystem Design Engineer

Chicago, Il, Us

GE’s Trip Optimizer, a product of Ecomagination, automatically controls a locomotive’s throttle, helping keep trains on schedule while minimizing fuel use. This makes the process of delivering locomotive freight more fuel-efficient and less costly.Trip Optimizer creates an optimal trip profile that can minimize braking by automatically learning a train’s characteristics. The system calculates the most efficient way of running by considering such factors as train length, weight, grade, track conditions, weather and locomotive performance.During the trip, a sophisticated network of on-board computers and GPS systems update the profile continuously, adjusting for changes so the train can arrive on time — and with minimum fuel use. Responsible for development of new functions and leading the team through design reviews covering concept, implementation, validation planning, testing, and support. Interacted directly with the customer while supporting various engineering runs for field testing, data collection, and identifying customer concerns by riding real trains loaded with test software.  Recognized as an expert of Route Accumulator function of Planner which is responsible for generating a route profile that governs the output of the optimized fuel plan. Recognized by peers and management for attention to detail, inclusiveness, work ethic, and external focus.  Cooperated with the global research team to solve challenging problems.
