CSC grew out of a series of circles and participatory action research related to race, education, and the arts in Denver, Boulder, and Albuquerque in 2011 and 2012. Communities called for increased education, dialogue, training, and organizing for social justice and racial equity. With the insight and accountability of an expert advisory team, co-founders Rachael K. Sharp and King Salim Ajanku developed an integrated model for creating long-term, community wide impact, integrating the “CSC 3”: Social Justice Frameworks, Arts Engagement, and Restorative Practices. Our current programs reflect the issues that are relevant to us as individuals, and our communities: specifically the “school-to-prison pipeline”, and the criminalization, brutalization, and mass incarceration of people of color. In August 2013, CSC became an official community partner with Denver Public Schools and facilitated enrichment and after school programs with more than 200 students in three schools.

Curated by Dr. Nicole Fleetwood, Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration, explores the work of artists within US prisons and the centrality of incarceration to contemporary art and culture. Featuring art made by people in prisons and work by nonincarcerated artists concerned with state repression, erasure, and imprisonment, Marking Time has exhibited at MoMA PS1 and the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts at University of Alabama at Birmingham.

"YAASPA was established in 2010 based upon Dr. Mackey and her husband's, co-founder, academic and career experiences[...] Being born and raised in Colorado and Black race scholar activist, Dr. Mackey came to learn about the challenges youth face in navigating their academic and career development in the social sciences amidst the Colorado Paradox. The Colorado Paradox is the phenomena that only 25% of 9th graders will earn a college degree and many are in need of remediation. In light of this, there have been career pathways created in order to build youth’s self-efficacy in business, fine arts, health sciences, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Many of the decisions to create these career pathways have been from a top- down approach and simply based upon the labor market. Consequently, there have been few endeavors to cultivate the self-efficacy for youth who desire to pursue a social justice career. Hence, to pursue degrees and careers in the social sciences. This is a gap that YAASPA mitigates via community organizing, advocacy and our programs which are: a course entitled civic engagement in community and career, scholarship fairs, social sciences and policy institutes and a new partnership with Community College of Aurora to award students a two-year scholarship who are interested in pursuing social science degrees. YAASPA also partners with organizations collaboratively to facilitate education advocacy to increase social equity."

The Black Issues Forum is a five-day program that gives participants the chance to interact with university faculty, staff, and current CSU students. Participants take part in meaningful conversation, enhance their leadership potential, and deepen their understanding of their cultural heritage while discussing issues facing today's Black community at the local, state, national, and/or global levels.

The Media Assistant is an hourly paraprofessional staff member in University Housing, Housing & Dining Services, which supports CSU’s Principles of Community: Inclusion, Integrity, Respect, Service, and Social Justice. The Media Assistant assists supports the University Housing Mission: “We strive to create vibrant and inclusive communities throughout students’ on campus housing experience which enhance learning, personal and social growth, and global engagement.” The Media Assistant does this by developing flyers, video content, photographs, media campaigns,, website content, and other publicity/educational materials as requested by University Housing staff. All materials are intended to be inclusive of the diverse populations served within the University Housing communities and reflect the values of the department.

At Big City Mountaineers, we bring the transformative power of time spent in nature to a generation of young people who face increased barriers to outdoor access, as well as other systemic challenges in their lives. A BCM experience helps youth better connect with themselves, with nature, with their community, and with a sense of joy. By providing free, fully outfitted, and professionally led outdoor and backcountry trips, we’re able to give youth ages 12 to 18 the opportunity to strengthen their skills, their mental and physical health, their social-emotional well being, and help them become better stewards of our planet. We engage young people in six metropolitan regions across the country, including Boston MA, Minneapolis MN, Denver CO, Seattle WA, Portland OR, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
