Researcher on atmospheric pollution, waste valorisation and applied geochemistry. Leader of a research group of 25 persons at CSIC. Supervisor of 26 PhD Theses. Author of around 470 scientific papers in SCI journals.Research focusing on air quality, specially on the study of atmospheric aerosols, environmental threat detection, the identification of the causes, proposing measures to abate pollution and the monitoring of the results. Our group has been one of the pioneering team in applying receptor modelling tools in Europe.Within Spain, research on the identification and quantification of sources to ambient air levels of PM has been applied so far to 40 industrial, urban and rural sites. The results have been used by many different plans to improve air quality. Coordinator and and lead author of the scientific and technical basis for the National Plan for Air Quality Improvement (NPAQ) in Spain, commissioned by the Ministry of Environment of Spain and basis of the NPAQ of Spain approved by the Council of Ministers on 11/2011 and 04/2013.Member of EU committees and working groups advising on air quality and climate directives. Currently vice-chairman of the scientific committee of the European Monitoring and Evaluation Program Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (EMEP, Geneva Convention, UN). He has been member of the PM and BC working groups of DG Environment of the EC and UNECE, and member of the current WHO Scientific Advisory Committee for the evaluation of the EC Air Quality Policy. Research has been also performed outside EU, especially in a number of regions of China, in Mexico, Colima, Tijuana, several areas of Turkey. Collaboration with US, UK, GR, IT, PT, FR, DE, FI, NO, SE, China, Tunisia, Korean and Australian research teams is currently ongoing.2013 Award Rey Jaime I for the Protection of the Environment.2009 Award of the Generalitat de Catalunya for Protection of the Environment.
