About Xavier Ekolle N.

I am a neuroscientist with a deep passion for discovering novel treatment and diagnostic biomarkers for brain disorders including epilepsy and traumatic brain injury. I explore different rodent models of brain injury and epilepsy to identify underlying functional and structural alterations that can be targeted for disease modification. I bring a new understand of brain disorder pathophysiology by employing techniques such as electroencephalography, optogenetic, magnetic resonance imaging, advance histological and microscopy imaging, and molecular biology. My current research interest includes elucidating the mechanism underlying traumatic brain injury-induced executive dysfunction and post traumatic epilepsy, with specific focus on subcortical network structural and functional alterations. In everything I do, I always seek to connect people and minds through good leadership, teaching and education, collaboration, and communication. Self-discovery, critical thinking, creativity, responsibility, and innovation is my mantra.

Adjunct Prof. Of Translational Neuroscience/ Senior Scientist
A.I. Virtanen Institute For Molecular Sciences, University Of Eastern Finland Jan 2018 - Nov 2022
    Kuopio, Eastern Finland, Finland
In vivo modeling of human diseases. Working with rodent model of traumatic brain injury. Studying relationship between secondary injury pathology and functional outcome. Particularly, progression of the cortical lesion, inflammation, vascular remodeling, neurodegeneration and the post-traumatic epilepsy outcome. Using optogenetics, axonal track tracing techniques, video-EEG and MRI to study post-TBI thalamocortical structural and functional plasticity.
  • Epilepsy Research Laboratory, Univeristy Of Eastern Finland
    Senior Researcher
Epilepsy Research Laboratory, Univeristy Of Eastern Finland Sep 2017 - Nov 2022
    Kuopio, Eastern Finland, Finland
Working as the coordinator of the international multi-center project The Epilepsy Bioinformatics Study for Antiepileptogenic Therapy (EpiBioS4Rx) at the Epilepsy Research Laboratory, University of Eastern Finland. Duties include planing and coordinating day-to-day experiments, assisting technically in producing the model, animal welfare follow-up, blood sampling, data collection and analysis and drug preparation and administration. Coordinating and harmonizing protocols with the other international partners including data collection and analysis.
  • Epilepsy Research Laboratory, University Of Eastern Finland
    Academy Of Finland Post-Doctoral Fellow
Epilepsy Research Laboratory, University Of Eastern Finland Sep 2014 - Aug 2017
    Kuopio, Eastern Finland, Finland
Worked on the project "Mechanisms and consequences of T lymphocyte invasion into the brain after TBI –a novel strategy to combat post-traumatic epilepsy. Studied the spatiotemporal evolution of T cell infiltration in the brain after TBI and effect on TBI functional outcome using the lateral fluid-percussion model of TBI, immunohistochemistry, video-EEG and behavioral analysis. Studied the progression of the cortical lesion using the unfolded map techniques and developed a web-app to study cortical lesions in rat and mouse.

Epilepsy Research Laboratroy, University Of Eastern Finland Jan 2013 - Aug 2014
    Kuopio, Eastern Finland, Finland
Setting up the optogenetics system and performing trails of several in vivo transduction with opsins.
  • Epilepsy Research Laboratroy, University Of Eastern Finland
    Phd Fellow
Epilepsy Research Laboratroy, University Of Eastern Finland Feb 2006 - Dec 2012
    Kuopio, Eastern Finland, Finland
Working with different in vivo animal models of temporal lobe epilepsy. Investigating mechanisms of epileptogenic tissue remodeling and the development of epilepsy. My worked focused mainly on the role of the urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and its receptor (uPAR) in the extracellular matrix tissue remodeling in epileptogenesis.
