About Xavier Lim

I am a driven student studying at School of InfoComm Technology at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and I am always giving my best effort for tests, quizzes, assignments and projects in the hopes of getting a desirable GPA at the end of three years. My greatest strength is being a good leader. I know how to communicate well with my classmates to get my point across clearly and I do not shy away from addressing challenges in a direct manner. I also keep an open mind all the time and am very receptive to new ideas. Instead of resisting change, I am highly adaptable and always welcome opinions that are different from my own. I am also good at leading by example. I believe that this is important as I believe that leading by example helps other people see what lies ahead of them and allows them to act swiftly to tackle any challenges along the way with confidence. During my time in Secondary School, I was a Sports Leader, where I played an active role in coordinating sports events for my school. Additionally, I took on the responsibility of mentoring and setting a positive example for my juniors.I did some part time work after my O Levels and also during the holidays in Polytechnic to gain work experience. I mainly worked in the service field over the holidays and as a result, my communication skills have improved greatly, as most of my jobs require working with my coworkers and talking to strangers on a daily basis so I had to step out of my comfort zone and talk to many people who I am not familiar with. Through my work experience, I have also learnt how to better perform under pressure. I have also done some volunteer work. I believe that they have helped to make me a better person as I have learnt to be more empathetic to the less fortunate and to help them whenever possible. I also learnt to be grateful and to not take anything for granted, which has led me to complain less and appreciate the things that I have more.Last but not least, I also represented my secondary school for badminton in several school competitions and have learnt many important soft skills such as how to perform under pressure, how to cope with the stress and how to bounce back from a defeat to come back stronger and be more resilient. All these experiences have shaped me into the person that I am today. Ultimately, I wholeheartedly commit to giving my best in every endeavor, relentlessly pursuing excellence regardless of the task at hand.To view the projects I have done:GitHub: https://github.com/xavierxavierlimBitbucket: https://bitbucket.org/xavierrlim/workspace/overview/

  • Ritz Carlton Colony
    Food Server
Ritz Carlton Colony Mar 2023 - Apr 2023
    7 Raffles Ave, Singapore 039799
I worked part time at Ritz Carlton Colony for one month, from March 2023 to April 2023. The tasks I do on a daily basis involve greeting diners' arrival with professionalism, taking orders and relaying them to the kitchen accurately, serving orders correctly and effectively, cleaning and resetting tables to maintain an organised dining area and proactively ensuring customer satisfaction.During this one month that I have worked at Ritz Carlton Colony, I have learnt several valuable skills that are important to my student and working life.Firstly, I've witnessed a significant improvement in my communication skills. Given the nature of this job, which involves engaging with people I am not familiar with, such as diners, I've consistently pushed myself outside my comfort zone, resulting in a heightened comfort level when interacting with strangers.Secondly, I have also became better at working under pressure. During busy periods, there will be many orders to be served, so I have to keep calm and focused to correctly serve diners the food or drinks they ordered. Although it was overwhelming at first, I slowly learnt how to keep calm even when there were many orders at once, so that I could serve diners the correct food and drinks and as quickly as possible.Lastly, my teamwork skills have undergone substantial growth. This job necessitates effective communication and collaboration with my colleagues, especially when I require assistance with tasks like coffee preparation or handling more complicate orders (i.e. alcohol). Through this valuable experience, I've acquired the ability to seamlessly coordinate with others, enhancing my work efficiency and contributing to overall customer satisfaction.
  • Live On Technology
    Wiring
Live On Technology Sep 2022 - Oct 2022
Blk 1092, Lower Delta Road, #03-13
I was in charge of preparing wires (cutting, crimping and printing labels for the wires) and installing the prepared wires into panels and have learnt a lot throughout my one month working here. Firstly, I learnt how important time management is, as my manager needs my help to prepare and install the wires by the given deadline so I learnt how to manage and plan my time efficiently so that more things can be done in a day in order to not be too stressed out when the deadline is near.Lastly, I have improved my communication skills and step out of my comfort zone. This is important as I understand that communication with higher ups and peers are needed in both student and working life. By talking to people I am not familiar with in the job (to ask for different types of wires or report a problem), I have to step out of my comfort zone and communicate clearly so that people understand what I am saying. This helps me improve my communication skills and forces me to step out of my comfort zone, which has made me more confident in myself.
  • Popular
    Retail Assistant
    Popular Feb 2022 - Mar 2022
    3 Gateway Dr, #04-26/27 Westgate, Singapore 608532
I worked part time for Popular from 15 February to 31 March and I was a Retail Assistant. Some of the things I do on the daily basis in my work are serving customers - helping them locate anything that they need, checking stock printing promotion labels to paste on items and putting price tags on items and packing for items to be returned.During this one and a half month that I worked, I have learnt skills that will be needed for both my student and working life.Firstly, my communication skills have improved tremendously as I have to be able to communicate clearly with customers. When customers ask me whether there is a certain product in stock, I have to be able to communicate clearly and politely to customers to tell them whether the product they are looking for is in stock or let them know when the product will be in stock. Additionally, if I am not aware if a certain product is in stock, I have to ask my colleagues so my communication skills have to be good for customers and my colleagues to understand me.Secondly, my teamwork skills have improved. Since there are not many people working at Popular, sometimes we will need to know how to coordinate amongst ourselves to split the workload. Working in Popular, I have to learn how to cooperate and work together with my colleagues as I will need to ask them for their help if I am not able to find an item a customer is looking for and vice versa. When one person is overwhelmed with something, the rest of us will step in to help them. Last but not least, I have became more extroverted and have found it easier to talk to people after working at Popular. Before that, I did not really dare to talk to strangers but after working at Popular, since I am being forced to step out of my comfort zone and talk to customers whom I do not know so I have to force myself to talk to customers when I do not know them. With enough practice, I have gotten used to talking to strangers which has made me become more extroverted.
