I’ve always been surprised by both, the capability of consultants to solve practical relevant problems without much specific technical knowledge and by the vast amount of knowledge that remains in stock, without much practical use, in the hands of university professors Throughout my already long professional career, my passion has been to act as a bridge between these two worlds. My experience as manager in multinational consultancy companies and my position as a professor at UPC’s Barcelona Industrial Engineering School (ETSEIB) puts me in a very good position to match business problems with technical knowledge. I have also enjoyed using my management experience to lead the Statistics Department or to organize, as deputy director, the relations between ETSEIB and industry. Traditionally my area of expertise has been Quality Management and through it and its emphasis on “data based decision making” I have evolved towards the fascinating area of Business Analytics and Data Science. There are so many opportunities to work in interesting problems that with some colleagues, who are also friends, we have launched Datancia, a company aiming to provide value through Advanced Data Analytics to businesses.In my spare time, I am an “aprendiz de todo y maestro de nada”. My interests are multiple and diverse: scuba diving, mountain biking, cooking, history, theater, sailing…
