Anthony Francis is an award-winning roboticist and author specializing in deep reinforcement learning for robot navigation and novels combining science fiction and fantasy. He works in Google Brain Robotics on deep reinforcement learning for robotic navigation and also studies the engineering applications of the cognitive psychology of emotion and the neuroscience of consciousness. His team's paper on combining deep learning with probabilistic planning, "PRM-RL: Long-range Robotic Navigation Tasks by Combining Reinforcement Learning and Sampling-based Planning," was awarded Best Paper in Service Robotics at ICRA 2018.His training at Georgia Tech was in artificial intelligence memory systems applied to information retrieval and robotics. He spent several years at Google working on advances to its search algorithms and interface, including the Custom Search Engine and 3D objects on the web. He writes urban fantasy, steampunk and space opera. His first novel, the urban fantasy FROST MOON, won the EPIC eBook Award for Fantasy/Paranormal Fiction, and has two sequels, BLOOD ROCK and LIQUID FIRE. He's also written a steampunk novel and a dozen stories in the Jeremiah Willstone universe.
