I'm a roboticist who spent much of the last decade working on deep reinforcement learning for robot navigation and language model planning, I have a quarter-century's experience working in technology companies from the very large to the very small - and I'm available to answer questions on robotics and machine learning on the GLG network.

I am independent robotics consultant specializing in deep learning for robot navigation. My work spans areas including reinforcement learning, classical planning, probabilistic planning, large language model planning, visual-language navigation, behavior trees for robotics, social robot navigation, emotional robotics, and embodied AI. I have worked at very large companies and have cofounded several startups.

In 2022, I joined the Vestry of Saint Stephens in-the-Field Episcopal Church for a third term of three years. My primary responsibility is the Communications Guild.

I workedd in Google Research on deep learning for robot navigation, particularly AutoRL (an evolutionary approach to deep RL), PRM-RL (combining probabilistic roadmaps with deep RL), and visual-language naviggation. My research involved core reinforcement learning, general machine learning in TensorFlow, practical work with ROS (the Robot Operating System) and other robot platforms, and all the joy and peril of Google's amazing distributed computing infrastructure.Previously, I spent three years in Google's Search Quality group helping to improve Google's ranking algorithms and two years in Google's Search Features group helping to improve its interface. During my time in Search Features, I was principal developer on the Custom Search Engine's structured search features. I also spent time in Google Research working on 3D object visualization and on robotics.
