Xiaochen Zhang is now a master's student in computational biology at the University of Melbourne and he is also a bioinformatics researcher and AI programmer. Xiaochen completed a bachelor’s degree in statistics at Beijing Jiaotong University.Xiaochen's interest in bioinformatics came from completing his undergraduate thesis. He devised machine-learning algorithms to find those that potentially cause lung cancer from genetic data. After that, he continued to use statistical methods to solve some clinical problems in the laboratory as a scientific research assistant. When he discussed with clinicians, he felt the great practical power of statistical models in the biology area. Therefore, Xiaochen updated his life plan, chose to study computational biology and was fortunate to join Prof. Kim-Anh Lê Cao’s lab.While taking classes, Xiaochen also participated in many industrial projects. He first joined Stonewise, a start-up company in the field of AI pharmaceuticals, where he designed AI algorithms to automatically annotate single-cell data and discover drug targets from them. Afterwards, he joined Alibaba DAMO Academy to design a customized AI breeding algorithm for the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Now, He helps Dr Tara Karnezis and her student Isabella Reid analyse their single-cell RNA-seq data from adipose clinical tissue supervised by Prof. Kim-Anh Lê Cao.
