Worked as an OR intern in developing heuristics in optimizing tours for package pickups. UPS has contracts with different companies, and drivers need to pick up packages from these companies by the end of each day. Drivers visit these sites every day. The problem involves sequencing the customers on each route in order to minimize cost while meeting all time windows constraints. On average, the heuristic generates routes that are 10% more efficient than the current UPS algorithm. It solves medium-sized problems in reasonable amount of time. The heuristic can promise to find the best route with lowest cost on medium-sized problem.
