About Xin Yang

At age of 11, on my way home, I first realized that I would die someday. I was so frightened by the idea that I couldn’t fall asleep that night. Until this day, death is still my biggest fear, but also my biggest incentive. With the fear of death, I became greedy and brave: I was eager to explore my life as much as I can. I see with my eyes the beauty that I capture with my camera, I smell and taste with my nose and mouth with diverse food around the world and cook them for others, I listen attentively with my ears to one language and translate to the other to erase the barrier for people. I appreciate the work of others and try whenever I can to craft myself. I explore with my foot different cultures and meet different faces to explore the unknown.Life is too short to experience everything, but not too short to discover where we can go.

Xin Yang Work Experience Details
  • 自雇
    Photographer
    自雇 Jun 2018 - Present
    Los Angeles, California, United States
My first camera was my dad's, at that time, neither my dad nor I would think one day I would be a photographer. My love for photography is a gradual process. It was until the day that I realized whenever I notice a beautiful moment or a sweet smile or delicious food, my first instinct is to take out my camera, that I realized that I fall in love with photography. Since then, my greed grew day by day, until I wasn't satisfied with waiting for the beauty to show, I start to create-- I learn to cook and arrange them well so that I could take pictures of them. But still, I wasn't confident about myself. Since none of my parents want me to do photography more than just a hobby... Until I leave home and go to college. I met one of my best friends, Elva, who recognized and encourages my ability. Later I met my Venus, Jackie, who is my best friend and best model. With her encouragement and introduction to her friend, I start my journey as a photographer. Photography is my eyes in my life, but also the eyes through which I want to share the world. It changes my life tremendously, it brings me friendship and confidence, and motivation to discover what else is to be found. Most importantly, a lesson I learned as a photographer is to be sincere. Let the model be whomever they are in front of the camera and communicate with them as sincerely as possible as a photographer. It was November 2021, when I recovered from my ankle surgery, I take my camera again, and finish my first paid photoshoot for a girl as her senior photoshoot. It was also the first time since the pandemic that I hang out with people. After the shooting, Jackie, her family, her doggie, she and I were sitting in a tent near the firework. It was cold outside, but I feel so warm inside. I guess that's how photography changes me: it gives me a new way to express myself, to connect with the world.

I thought my apartment is just a block away from school until I have an 8 am class in the winter. Until I tried the scooter, I found it's such a life changer. Having a similar experience as I am, my friend, Chandler, decided to start his scooter business. He first reaches out to me as a target audience, then I realize that I wanted to use what I learn in the marketing class to promote it to more students like us. That's how I reach back to him and ask if he needs help, and immediately we deiced to collaborate together. So far, we've done one photo shoot for the social media post and website.
  • Modern Minority Theatre Company
    Costume Designer
Modern Minority Theatre Company Oct 2022 - Present
    Los Angeles, California, United States
I work as a costume designer in the show Peerless. I first grew my interest in costume from my daily outfit. Whenever possible, I love to put some effort into my outfit to light up my spirit. However, I'm constantly moving, so can't have a large wardrobe, and that was the time that I realized the power of accessories. Soon, I begin to use the technique with my models during portrait photo shooting. This allows them to wear their own clothing and feel comfortable, but at the same time feel different from the casual daily scenes. I usually share my wardrobe with them, or I will work with their existing clothing. This helps me find out the way to work with a tight budget. With these passion and skills, along with my great interest in stage performance. I applied for this job and am so glad about my choice. Working backstage is challenging, and there's more work to do before and after the show. But I appreciate that I have this great opportunity to work with my team and learned as I go.
  • Bocamexa
    Marketing Intern
    Bocamexa Feb 2022 - Apr 2022
    Paris, Île-De-France, France
One of my favorite movies, Kamome Diner, which is about a group of Japanese women running a Japanese restaurant in Finland, evokes my dream of becoming a restaurant owner. So when I finally had a chance, I decided to work for this chain Mexican restaurant that is based in Paris, France, to see and learn. However, even though I always enjoy preparing meals for my loved ones, have learned French for almost three years, and have studied for marketing class for two years, working in a marketing position in France is yet a new field for me. Fortunately, Mr. Sagues, the operation manager of BOCAMEXA, kindly guided me through the transition period. We work closely for improving the visual presentation of the store's special craft beer. That was the first time I work as a visual designer. The main project that we work on is to come up with a better visual presence for the house's special craft beer. We went through different thoughts, the Kraft paper tags, and wooden tags, and finally decided on a mini wooden ban. During these processes, we constant brainstorming implemented, and modified our designs. In the end, my crafting skill became very useful.: I cut off the wooden panel with an electrical saw and assemble them afterward. Never have I thought the process of designing would require so much attention to every detail. So I was really grateful for the chance and was proud to distribute them to each of our stores. The other task that I have is to do photoshoots for both our craft beer and food. Since photography is my biggest passion, I was so excited to do commercial photography for the first time. What's more exciting is that my work was later used on their Instagram post.
  • Housing, Food And Services Department Of University Of Washington
    Dining Services Student Employee

Although I first start this work for the salary, pretty soon I found myself enjoying doing it. My job is rotating, sometimes I work as a cashier, and sometimes I work in the back of the house. What I enjoy the most is the work in the back of the house. Despite the loud noise of the machine, the food preparation process is very pleasant. What I learned from this job is to enjoy, and slow your pace to watch everything that happens and every person comes and goes. Unlike most of my college life, where I sit next to someone in the lecture but never have a chance to talk to them and even remember their faces, working in the kitchen allows me to slow down and get to know people with whom I spend time with. As we talk more, I learned more. Sometimes it's about people, like me surprisingly found out that one of the chefs loves animations. Sometimes it's about life hacks, and I know from a chef who is a big fan of movies that the movie theater is also selling monthly tickets, which is a way better deal compared to the regular one. The faster way to cut the cauliflower and bell pepper. Sometimes it's about a working hack, where one of the student co-workers tells me to use a rectangular shape container to clean the clog in the sink, which is much faster compared to the round one I've always been using. Most importantly, I learn to spend time to know others. I felt connected.
