About John Warren

I am a technical operations manager with over 18 years experience in chemical research and crystallography. I created advanced materials analysis techniques pioneering and specialising in non-ambient chemical crystallography having spent over five years managing the world leading single crystal facility at the Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS), Daresbury. To date I have co-authored over 150 papers and patents co-supervised three successful PhD students and managed a PDRA and station deputy. I am an avid Linux user, founder of the xrayforum and competent programmer in multiple languages including SQL, Python, R, Fortran, PHP, and html. I have used these skills to build custom research platforms, develop analysis tools and built statistical usage models of the facilities I have operated within the backdrop of standardising, improving and supporting the communities they served. For me the core of an University should be to “bring new knowledge into the world through teaching and research” our people are the conduit required to do this and we must support and provide guidance to achieve this goal and importantly lead through example. A strong synergistic connection exists between my vision and three core goals of research, teaching and social responsibility formed from Manchester’s “Our Future” strategic plan and new vision which was announced in January 2020. Centred around “our people and our values” to define “our vision” of being recognised globally for our collective excellence and benefits to society and the environment.
