Dr. Jian Xu is an internationally recognized Chinese intellectual property expert. He is the Managing Director and Head of IP Prosecution at Gowling WLG Beijing, where he leads the firm's Chinese IP practice. A dually qualified Chinese attorney (2008) and patent/trademark agent (2006), he was the first local Chinese employee when Gowling WLG established its China office in 2008.With a unique combination of scientific background and legal expertise, Jian provides strategic advice on all aspects of intellectual property, including patent, trademark, and copyright prosecution and enforcement, IP portfolio management and monetization, complex IP litigation and administrative actions across China, IP licensing and technology transfer, with particular focus on life sciences and chemical sectors.Jian holds a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Manchester (UK) and a BSc in polymer chemistry from Beijing University of Chemical Technology. This strong scientific foundation enables him to bridge technical innovation with legal protection effectively.Recognized as a leading individual in WTR Trademark 1000 and IAM Patent 1000 since 2016, Jian serves as an IP expert at the European IPR SME Helpdesk and the British and Canadian Embassy in Beijing. He is the author of "Chinese Intellectual Property – A Practitioner's Guide" (China IP Publishing House, 2013) and a frequent speaker at international IP conferences.
