Physics includes: melting/solidification, surface tension/Marangoni effects, laser absorption, interface instability, and Lagrangian powder motion.Synthesized results from high-speed X-ray imaging and multi-physics simulation to quantify the thermal-fluid and powder dynamics in metal 3D printing and laser welding.Developed a cellular automata model to simulate the grain nucleation and growth in metal 3D printing. Identified nucleation conditions that control the grain structure being equiaxed or columnar.
