In 1849 the Literary and Philosophical Society formally presented to the town its various collections, which have grown and developed over the last 160+ years into one of the premier museums in the region.New Walk has been the inspiration for many people including Anthony d'Offay who recognises New Walk as the start of his lifelong fascination with art in all its forms; and Lord Richard Attenborough and Sir David Attenborough, who both pursued their love of art and natural history as a result of spending their formative years as regular visitors to the galleries. New Walk is Leicester's oldest museum and has wide-ranging collections spanning the natural and cultural world with the Egyptian Gallery, German Expressionism collections, Picasso Ceramics Collection, Dinosaur Gallery, Victorian Art, Decorative Arts and Crafts from around the world, children's activity den and regular travelling exhibitions, with a vibrant café on site there really is something for everyone.
