About Yafit Taranto

'I want to do to you what Rothko does to blue'I believe that the experience of art enriches peoples' lives and helps them to take a closer look at the world around them. My professional mission is to help more people to benefit from the art experience. I do this by working together cultural institutions to promote themselves in a 21th-century mode. I believe that a visit to the museum should be a thrilling experience. It should engage the visitors and make their senses and awareness blossom. My work is shaped by my love for aesthetics and scholarship; bringing knowledge and beauty together to the new generation of museum audience. For the past decade, I have been making films for museums and cultural institutions as the Van Gogh museum, the Amsterdam Stadsschouwburg, the Joods Historisch Museum, the Amsterdam Museum a.o.Currently, I am busy with creating an online video magazine that will make you fall in love with art again.

I started working as a freelancer for the Van Gogh museum in 2008 where I made the first giant video projections in the central hall during Friday Night (vrijdagavond) events. Friday Night is a weekly cultural program that takes place in the Van Gogh museum on Friday evening 18:00-22:00. This program reaches audience in the ages 20-45 by combining a visit to the museum (after office hours) with live music, dance and art performances, guided tours and cocktails. Turning the museum into a contemporary art playground, I have no doubt that Vincent Van Gogh would have loved this evening. After turning the white museum walls into my canvas for a year, I began making short content video’s for the Friday evening program. Presenting the relevancy of 19th century paintings in a social environment of this millennium. In 2013 I was leading the audiovisual team of the Friday evening. Each month a new group of five students was chosen from a different art institution. This team made an online promo film and registration film for the Friday evening. At the same time I was mentoring the monthly VJ team making sure aesthetics and content met on the museum walls. In 2014 I started making videos for the museum’s temporary and permanent collection. Among others I made a video wall for the new design of the permanent Van Gogh collection in 2014, showing Vincent van Gogh as a cultural phenomenon. In 2015 I made “Decoration-Frieze” a video installation in the Munch- Van Gogh exhibition. This installation presented (virtually) two intended series of the masters that were never shown anywhere before, accompanied by text written by Edvard Munch and Vincent Van Gogh and music by Richard Wagner.

‘How to Disappear in Europe’ is a project comprising analogue photography, journalism and literature. The result is aroaming photographic exhibition accompanied by a fantasy travel guidebook. Theexhibition and book takes its viewer on a journey through the personallandscapes of those who lead a clandestine existence in Europe.Immigrants are often portrayed in a somber way in political pamphletsand in the general media, yet immigration can also be seen as an act of optimismand hope of a better future. Throughout this project, we take the subject matterout of the political realm and focus on the daily routines of the subjects. By usingfresh aesthetics and points of views, our challenge lies in the portraying of thisrepeatedly discussed subject in a brand new light. The book is divided into 27 chapters, one for each European country. Eachchapter is dedicated to one country and will show the life of a clandestine subjecttherein. For each country a lomographer will be chosen and asked to take a seriesphotographs. The first will be a portrait of the immigrants, without revealing thesubject’s identity. The challenge of the photographers will lie in the portraying ofan invisible person, while still showing the person’s essence as an entity withouthis or her physical presence. The second picture will be a representation of thespecific country as the chosen photographers see it.Next, with the help of these photographers, 27 immigrants will beselected, one for each country. The immigrants will lead the storytelling bydisplaying their daily lives. They will each receive an instant camera and theirassignment will be to create a photographic diary by capturing their environment:by taking pictures of their bed, working place, windows, meals and hobbies. The result will be a refreshing collage of photographs reflecting thepresent lives of these 27 people in their respective European surroundings.http://www.lovelyplanet.eu/shop.html
