Digital Medic Ambassador
Our vision at Digital MEdIC is to improve global health outcomes by increasing access to medical education and building human capacity. Our mission is to collaboratively create high quality, accessible, and customized healthcare learning experiences that are openly available online to anyone, anywhere, anytime. As part of this effort, I help create and optimize content for the largest initiative of its kind at Stanford University.
Post-Doctoral Researcher
Graduate Research Scientist
As a graduate student, I attended the top program in my field and worked with a technique called crystallography, a physical science that lays a foundation for many other fields in medicine and bioengineering. We applied this technique to study the structure of two proteins recently implicated in the development and metastasis of cancer. I discovered how these proteins localize to their site of action and how they recognize their substrates. Through novel biophysical information, my work laid a foundation for the development of new therapies because we now have a better understanding of how to design inhibitors that block binding of substrates.
Team Leader For The Natural Sciences
I gained almost five years of mentoring experience in training scientists and clinicians through my leadership as the head of the Sciences division of the Graduate Writing Lab (GWL) at Yale. I wanted to help others improve their writing skills through the GWL because I am dedicated to promoting diversity in technical fields, a commitment I will honor when establishing my own laboratory.Working directly with two of the Assistant Deans at Yale, I designed and led workshops to train scientists, engineers, and physicians in public speaking, technical writing, and grant writing. I made the workshops engaging and memorable, bringing the Yale community together. For these efforts, I became a finalist for the Annie Le Fellowship at Yale, which honors a student's commitment to his or her academic community. More importantly, I gained training as a leader with a strong service background.
Graduate Student
I want to better understand patient needs and to translate advances from my laboratory into clinical use. Given my experiences with healthcare and that of my family, I am especially passionate about supporting cancer patients during difficult, stressful times, like their months of chemotherapy. I realized this as one of six students accepted into the Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP) at Yale, a three-year honors program that familiarizes graduate students with medicine. I also shadowed oncologists and appreciate their unique opportunity to support patients week after week. I applied my interests to volunteer with the Arts for Healing Program at the Smilow Cancer Center at Yale, through which I help to enrich the lives of cancer patients by bringing art to their bedside. These experiences prepare me to serve as a physician who supports cancer patients during their treatment and a scientist who contributes to research in this field.
Research Intern, Lead Optimization
Through my work and from mentors who have always so generously offered their insights, I learned about the challenges of discovering and designing therapeutics. I was exposure to the industrial sector of medical research during my first year in graduate school upon being selected for a Yale-sponsored internship at Bristol Meyers Squibb, a pharmaceutical company. Through this experience, I gained skills and perspective that will allow me to establish collaborations with industry in the future when working to translate advances from the laboratory into the clinic.
Research Scientist
I became interested in the creative and design elements of research as an undergraduate when I was selected for two competitive research programs, through which I executed a three-year project to explore toxicity and drug design in breast cancer. I engineered tools for the development of novel, less toxic therapies and published three academic papers and a book chapter with my research mentor. Inspired, I chose to attend graduate school to perform research that paves a path toward more effective cancer therapies.
