Phd Candidate
PhD topic: "Techniques for scenario prediction and switching in system scenario based designs"Short description of my PhD topic:In embedded systems today, energy efficiency and power consumption is a major design constraint. Hand held devices are becoming more complex, because applications embedded in these devices require advanced functionality, in addition to increased parallelism. Many high endembedded systems today are more dynamic in nature, and conventional embedded system design techniques are not able to meet the requirements of today’s demanding software functionality. State-of-the-art design methodologies try to cope with this challenge by identifying typical use cases and dealing with them separately, in order to reduce the increased complexity of the system. Conventional techniques focus mainly on static analysis where no dynamism is present. When dynamism is introduced, then only the worst case behavior is used as a constraint. A well balanced combined design-time/run-time two-phase methodology exist, and is known as the system scenario based design. It exploits the dynamic variation in an application, where tunable system knobs, such as frequency, voltage, shutdown of sub-memories, enabling/disabling accellerators, and low power modes, are tuned dynamically at system level (i.e., a level not observable by the user) during run-time in order to gain significant reductions in energy consumption. The goal of this research project is to find optimal techniques for the system scenario prediction and switching steps of this design methodology when data dependent control variables determines the behavior of the application. The project is within the scope of the IEM Strategic research area on Energy Efficient Computing Systems (EECS) at NTNU. The work will be done in co-operation with Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL) and IMEC Leuven as part of a Dual-PhD agreement.
Chief Integrator And Design Engineer
From August 2012 to August 2013:Chief Integrator and Digital Design Engineer; responsible for the chip integration process and chip database. The tasks include integration of digital modules, analog modules, and library models, then making sure all parts of the system is connected properly. Also worked as Digital Design Engineer in this time period, doing design upgrades of a serial communication module (USART, SPI, I2C) with clock domain crossing. From August 2009 to August 2012:Digital Design Engineer; worked with the implementation of hardware accelerators and co-processors, memory intercommunication, implementation of instructions, and I/O memory space design related to Atmel's maXTouch™ microcontroller products. This includes verification and validation of microcontrollers, and giving support to other design teams.
