The last step on the ladder so far. I lead a small temporary community for homeless people and the team of six people who support it. No other position has allowed me to learn so much about myself. Arriving with little experience, I immersed myself in all the relevant issues, sat on the recruitment panel for the new team, built strong links with all stakeholders, reviewed and adapted procedures to meet the new demands of the service and created new protocols to make the service run more smoothly. My current responsibilities include providing and monitoring the support offered to community residents, providing support, supervision and guidance to the team, assessing and implementing the need for change, assessing risks and how to prevent and manage them, and a long list of other things.

After a year as a residential volunteer at Social Bite Village, I was recognised for my valuable skills and cultural adaptability and encouraged to apply for a permanent position. Once there, I worked with a designated group of service users, providing them with regular support to manage and overcome challenging situations. This support included providing housing support, carrying out assessments and monitoring processes. During my time I promoted empowerment, decision making, community participation and engagement with volunteering and training opportunities. I also managed risks associated with challenging behaviour and contributed to the service through planning and following best practice, whilst striving for continuous improvement. My Keyworker experience was transformative and fuelled my passion for empowering vulnerable people and making a positive difference to their lives.

Social Bite Village houses up to sixteen residents, each facing unique challenges such as family breakdown, substance abuse or mental health issues. As a volunteer, I played a crucial role as a peer mentor, aiming to maintain a calm and nurturing atmosphere, minimise conflict and promote positive interactions. I also provided guidance, motivation and constructive feedback to the residents. Living alongside them, I was actively involved in their daily lives, sharing household responsibilities and participating in decision-making processes. This fostered an empowering environment where residents could rebuild their self-esteem, develop essential skills and work towards a brighter future. Throughout my volunteering experience, I witnessed the profound impact that collective support and collaboration had on the lives of the residents. Being able to contribute to their personal growth and well-being was immensely rewarding. It reinforced my commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
