In January 2003, I joined the senior administrative staff of Princeton HealthCare System (my client at that time) as Vice President & General Counsel, and as a critical thinker/member of a turn-around team for PHCS's acute-care hospital, University Medical Center at Princeton. During my ten years at PHCS, I established an organization-wide legal infrastructure, improved corporate and medical staff governance, structured hospital-physician joint ventures (including two ambulatory surgery centers), helped turn a struggling community teaching hospital into an award-winning institution (according to Leapfrog Group and The Joint Commission), and assisted with the institution's replacement-hospital development project, an endeavor which took nine years and resulted in PHCS's relocation to a newly-constructed hospital facility, University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, in May 2012. In addition, I was responsible for all legal matters at the institution, including corporate, taxation and pension, contracts, policy development, health law/regulatory, risk management and litigation, real estate transactions, and tax-exempt financing, and served as counsel to the Board of Trustees, liaison to the Governance & Nominating Committee, legal advisor to the Medical Staff Executive, Bylaws, Credentials, and Biomedical Ethics Committees, and member of the Joint Conference and Professional Affairs Committee.
