As project engineer in the Commercial Vehicles and Engines Division, I am the contact person for our Japanese subsidiary and responsible for Japanese customers. The tasks include technical and sales project management from enquiry, design creation and dimensioning through the prototype phase to series production handover. A particular challenge is overcoming cultural differences and working procedures, which requires close coordination with the customers and our subsidiary. Furthermore, close cooperation with the production and quality departments is essential for the success of the projects.

During my three months as a research assistant, I was able to continue working on the topic of my master's thesis. The focus was on preparing the results of the research for further publication, as well as documenting and passing on the models used and the knowledge gained.

In my master's thesis, I worked on predicting the energy consume of a milling machine based on the NC code to be executed. In a first step, a digital twin was implemented in Python, which models the kinematics and process forces. In a second step, artificial neural networks (PyTorch) were used to predict high-frequency time series for the power of the individual axes. In addition to a prototypical evaluation in the field of energy optimization, the model can also be used in the field of predictive maintenance. Publications have been produced as part of the work.

As a working student, I was able to gain comprehensive insights into the process and management of various projects. On the one hand, I dealt with technical aspects. This included working on process engineering flow diagrams, the calculation and design of system components and technical documentation. On the other hand, I was able to gain experience in the structural processing of projects, carried out calculation tasks and supported construction site/customer visits.

During my six-month technical internship, I was able to gain important practical industrial experience in the mechanical design and testing teams. My activities included the new development, redesign and dimensioning of assemblies. The detailed maintenance of spare parts data in SAP showed me the importance of consistent data management and gave me the opportunity to work with colleagues internationally. I also dealt with the planning, measurement procurement, implementation and evaluation of machine tests.

In order to support the financing of my studies, I was able to experience and learn basic business management principles first-hand through my independent commercial activity in e-commerce. The experience I gained, particularly with regard to working independently and entrepreneurial thinking, has left a lasting impact on me.
