The project will investigate the impact of large scale intensive bamboo forest management model and its contribution to a sustainable bamboo forest and economic development

The objective of the pilot project is to develop a methodology for the objective assessment of the carbon sequestration potential by bamboo forest (including contribution to the IPCC TFI guidance) and evaluation of such potential depending of the land management and environmental conditions. The project is coordinated by World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and implemented by International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR), GNS Science (New Zealand), National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), New Zealand, Chinese Meteorological Administration (CMA), China, Zhejiang University of Technology (ZJUT), China.

The pilot activity aims to contribute to rural revitalization and low-carbon development through developing systematic capacity building mechanisms in bamboo industries, enhancing sustainability of bamboo handicraft production, mobilizing young people’s interests to engage with bamboo handicraft as a decent job, and synergizing rural adaptive management. The activity also undertakes pilot action on carbon reduction and low-carbon development in and around World Heritage site based on Chishui’s bamboo resource, to explore ways of climate-responsible rural development and to enhance rural climate resilience, which contributes to the China's commitment to achieve carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.

The UKRI, GCRF Trade, Development and the Environment Hub, led by UNEP-WCMC, brings together over 50 partner organisations from 15 different countries – aiming to grow the positive impact that sustainable trade has on the world. The project studies trade in wildlife, wild meat and agricultural goods worldwide in Brazil, Central Africa, China, Indonesia and Tanzania. As one of the project partners, INBAR is focus on sustainable trade of bamboo and rattan products.

The CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA) is the world’s largest research for development programme designed to enhance the role of forests, trees and agroforestry in sustainable development and food security and to address climate change. CIFOR leads FTA in partnership with Bioversity International, CATIE, CIRAD, INBAR, ICRAF and TBI.

Production-driven forest landscape restoration under REDD+ through private sector – community partnerships as Asian regional learning exchange (FLOURISH project) aims to develop community-private sector business partnerships in achieving forest restoration, forest productivity and improved livelihoods in Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam. The approach will pilot suitable to the local context a set of business models between smallholders and local private sector supported by NGOs, local governments, and universities. Focus will be on production, harvesting and processing of durable wood and bamboo products, and the replacement of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) with economically viable forest-biomass products (pellets). The forest landscape restoration (FLR) approach will focus on reducing forest fires and restoring forest productivity, providing a commercial safety-net to local communities through food security, and thus enhancing their climate change adaptive capacity. Lessons from the project will be synthesized to generate policy recommendations, knowledge and capacity development products and academic papers.

Chishui, Guizhou, China

By taking bamboo-related green products and creative cultural handicrafts as the entry point, this activity aims to enhance sustainable livelihood development for local communities through strengthening local capacity building and pro-poor and green bamboo production in Chishui region. It also explores way to promote the linkage between cultural and natural, tangible and intangible heritage for sustainable development of local communities at the World Heritage site. In partnership with UNESCO Office Beijing and the Chishui Natural World Heritage Management Bureau, this piloting activity is under the Programme of Conservation & Management of World Heritage Sites in China (Phase III) within the framework of UNESCO-CYDF-Mercedes-Benz Star Fund FIT Project.

The project "Greening food production and consumption: Transforming the highly- polluting and resource- consuming edible bamboo shoot industry into a sustainable value chain in China"is funded by the European Commission with the aim to build the capacity of food processing SMEs in food safety and quality, environmental performance, sustainable consumption and production and other aspects to establish a highly efficient and green food preservation and processing chain. The outcomes of the project are expected to benefit 600 SMEs across the country.

The project ”Sustainable revival of livelihoods in post-disaster Sichuan: Enhancing eco-friendly, pro-poor bamboo production supply chains to support reconstruction ” aims to increase livelihood opportunities through environmentally sustainable production of bamboo re-building materials in Sichuan, especially in earthquake-affected areas.
