Give Back To Earth is a student run waste management organisation which aims to remedy the improper waste disposal system of our country. According to SAFE (South Asian Forum for Environment), 5372 tonnes of urban municipal solid waste is generated in Kolkata everyday of which 37% is compostable, but not even a tenth of this waste is recycled and most of it is sent to the Dhapa landfill. This waste has only added to the release of harmful pollutants in Kolkata and we at Give Back To Earth have an answer: Composting. We design and manufacture and sell composting equipment to residential societies in the city and also donate it to villages nearby. In its current iteration, our composting machine - named MAATI (Bengali for soil) - consists of two 210-litre cylinders that rotate about a horizontal axis via a gear system. Our specially designed composters give definite solutions to the chief obstacles faced in the process of composting, namely: prolonged periods it takes for each batch of compost to decompose, the foul smell generated by the waste and the large amount of space taken up by the composting equipment. Our machine is specially made airtight with an industrial gasket and has wheels attached to the bottom making it completely mobile. The high speed rotation via the gear system helps in increasing the surface area of the waste by breaking them down thus facilitating speedy composting.

I was one of the 15 students (out of 150) who were a part of the 21st Dublin Exchange Programme of St. Xavier's Collegiate School, Kolkata. This program was designed by keeping social service at its focal point. In the 15 days spent in Dublin, I helped the teachers of mentally and physically disabled children. I learned a lot about the way special children in Dublin were taught.The most important experience was of me living with a foreign family which led to an intertwining of cultures.
