Participated in the R&D department as a paid intern for developing a prototype of Micro-QR (5 cm) with enhanced optical security features by using and optimising an in-house Industrial Solid State Laser system (UV:355 nm; 20 W @ 50 KHz) at Grove Park.Developed a formal proposal and detailed work plan under the guidance of Robert Renton and worked with Garry Mudd to optimise the ablation energy of laser pulses to achieve the desired optical depth by removing the Al layer while also preserving the optical features underneath the embossing to provide an extra layer of security on the holograms. Maintained a full record of daily activities and results obtained.Worked on integrating the camera to predict the exact spot size of the ablation area to be able to create complex shapes and sizes. Utilised Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to design test samples and control parameters such as laser energy, spot size, frequency, and others to determine the ablation period.Performed in-house Optical Microscopy to determine the quality of microstructures and Atomic Force Microscopy at the MTIF building hosted by NTU to analyse and ensure the optical depth of the origination samples within the limit (~ 10 nm). Also participated in growing a Nickel shim in the Electroforming room and partnered with a staff member to create a complex hologram shape that resulted in success as we managed to match the optical depth with the wavelengths of visible light enabling a firm coloured visualisation.Presented the final sample to the client and head of production for feedback. Trained a junior laboratory technician to safely operate the system and replicate the mechanisms.
