The Code Oranje pilot initiated by KCAF (Kenniscentrum Aanpak Funderingen), aimed to develop a method for private or public property owners to monitor the condition of the foundation structure of their properties (mostly residential dwellings) in real-time. In The Netherlands many timber pile foundations suffer from the negative effects of lowering of the groundwater tables, increase of structural loads (negative skin friction) and biological degradation of the timber by bacteria or mould. In the pilot, foundations and their environment are continuously monitored by means of sensors. The purpose of Code Oranje (foundation is in danger zone) is to better predict when the foundation would require maintenance, repair or replacement.Currently the pilot project comprises of five blocks of houses in Rotterdam, and other cities are joiningthe project. The pilot project ‘Code Oranje’ (https://www.kcaf.nl/pilot-code-oranje/) has been developed to monitor the foundations by means of sensors. In this stage, 3 types of sensors that are in use with the pilot have been investigated - (i) Groundwater level; (ii) Displacement; and (iii) Rotation. This research aims to calibrate the sensors and to assess whether the sensors are suitable for the scope of Code Oranje. The research was carried out commissioned by RVO, the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland and KCAF (Kenniscentrum Aanpak Funderingen).

I worked on how occupant behaviour affects the energy consumption of typical Dutch residential dwellings. During this period, I developed a cost-efficient sensor system to collect real-time data from the three selected candidate's houses. This data was then fed into IES virtual environment - a dynamic energy simulation software for analysis on how the energy performance gap can be bridged. Furthermore, I researched how sensors and actuators can be used to explore the possibilites of how buildings can be self-aware, smart and as a result energy-efficient. In essence, Internet of Things applied with the knowledge of Building Physics.
