Working at the Magdi Yacoub Institute testing the permeability of ‘jet sprayed’ heart valve scaffolds built around 3D printed moulds, in human conditions allowed me to explore new technologies. I quickly became proficient in 3D printing as well as the ‘jet spraying’ technique in which PCL fibres are shot at the printed moulds whilst being simultaneously spun on a mandrel. Here I also learnt to appreciate the importance of clinical testing. The experiments that I designed and carried out independently,allowed for me to explore the suitability of the 3D printed heart valves in vitro, until animal trials were initiated. I shadowed trial coordinators, as well as this I prepared and carried samples to and from the research facility.

My work experience placement in the Renal Department at the Royal London Hospital developed my client focussed approach to work through the initial administrative tasks set, in organising patient appointments, as well as experience shadowing NHS workers. I gained experience handling clinical data in hospital databases, in which I developed upon my computer skills in all Microsoft Office programmes. Further to this, experience with these databases enabled me to pay a high attention to detail and accuracy to resolve data discrepancies on a regular basis. My time here provided me with excellent feedback from my coordinators, whom I was able to turn to and proactively seek guidance from.
