As a mentor, my primary focus was to help students build a solid foundation in programming, guiding them through both fundamental and advanced concepts. I introduced them to GitHub, emphasizing best practices like branching and collaboration tools, which are critical for managing coding projects. This experience prepared students for industry-level development and taught the importance of team collaboration. I also stressed the importance of writing clean and efficient code by following best practices such as proper indentation, meaningful variable names, and modular design, helping students understand how structured code improves readability, reduces errors, and simplifies debugging. Also, I led them through the C++ library, teaching them how to leverage built-in functions for optimization, while also covering various types of loops including for, while, for-each, and do-while loops. so they could determine the best use cases for each and avoid common errors like infinite loops. As the class advanced, we worked with object-oriented programming (OOP), particularly focusing on inheritance, allowing students to build scalable and maintainable programs by reusing and extending code. We also explored data structures such as arrays, sets, and lists, along with algorithms like binary search for fast data retrieval and recursion for solving problems through smaller instances. This comprehensive approach equipped students with both practical programming skills and problem-solving abilities.
