NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates Participant: Modeling and Control of Stainless-Steel Syringe Liquid Delivery, in the lab of Professor Alice White. The aim of the study is to increase knowledge and understanding of flow rates of highly viscous liquids such as blood from stainless-steel syringe pump systems.• Shadowed experimental process of blood damage and the problem with air trapped inside of a stainless-steel syringe and collected project data for the model.• Investigated how air reservoirs within syringe systems contributed to blood damage and understood the role viscosity plays in optimizing medical device design. • Modeled different blood viscosities by creating different glycerol-water mixtures to analyze how this physiological factor impacts the blood flow rate in stainless steel syringe pump systems. • Utilized MATLAB to quantify and analyze flow rate deviations from expected values based on image and audio experimental data. • Presented our results at the end of the summer REU/RET poster session.
