In 2013, I was a high school senior; the president of two clubs, founder of one; a musician; an Eagle Scout; a National Hispanic Recognition Scholar; and a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed prospective Stanford frosh. During the four years prior, I studied Latin (formally) and Mandarin Chinese (self-taught), and I discovered a passion for languages and linguistics. While at Stanford, I focused on linguistics courses relating to phonetics/phonology, language pedagogy, and language revitalization; I studied Modern Standard Arabic, Classical Nahuatl, Mandarin Chinese, American Sign Language, Igbo, and Lakota, and I conducted research as a research assistant alongside Rob Podesva and Meghan Sumner in the linguistics department, and Guadalupe Valdez in Education Department. I earned a BAH in Linguistics, and my honors thesis, under the direction of Paul Kiparsky, was/is a small first step towards proving I discovered the origins of human speech, masked as a study analyzing the correlation between language change and demographic change (further disguised as a study of the Upstate New York accent). In the time since, I've been working in hospitality, honing my communication, customer service, organization, team building, and management skills—previously at a Hilton, and now in Stanford Housing—and I have spent much of my free time working on a couple of educational YouTube channels, as well as learning about business and starting comuno.org—a language practicing platform cooperative that rewards users for language practice.
