Yhasmin Mendes De Moura Email and Phone Number
Short-bio: I am a passionate Remote Sensing scientist who is constantly investigating how various anthropogenic pressures are affecting ecosystems and biodiversity. Since the beginning of my scientific career, I have been involved in environmental sciences and remote sensing. My key strength is the combination of my endless curiosity and my strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Throughout my scientific career, I have developed several competencies including excellent organisational, management and communication skills while developing research using cutting-edge remote sensing techniques. I truly believe that complex environmental problems require collaboration and inter-disciplinary skills to be solved efficiently and with the use of a holistic approach. Therefore, I am committed to excellence and to establishing effective partnerships and diverse international collaborations. Through my professional trajectory I have gained extensive international experience with a year internship in the USA during my Ph.D. (Oregon State University), three years as a Royal Society Newton International Fellow in the UK, one year as a research visitor at the University of Helsinki, in Finland, and currently, I hold a postdoctoral position at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, in Germany. The broader focus of my activities as a scientist has been the development and implementation of new approaches to infer the climate sensitivity of Amazonian forests, land-use and environmental changes, and carbon accounting to support conservation and policy efforts.

Royal Society Newton International FellowUniversity Of Leicester Jan 2018 - Feb 2021Leicester, England, United KingdomDuring the project, entitled “Assessing forest degradation and related carbon loss in the Amazon forest” I have used state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies (Light Detection And Ranging - LiDAR) to quantify carbon dynamics over degraded Amazonian forests. My main research activities are: the scientific development of methods and algorithms that allows for processing large datasets (derived from LiDAR point clouds) to derive carbon stocks and dynamics; to evaluate carbon dynamics over degraded tropical forests and its implications for carbon mitigation strategies; to contribute to the ongoing discussion on the role of degraded tropical forests when considering climate change projections and carbon accounting methods. -
Research FellowNational Institute For Space Research (Inpe) Jan 2017 - Oct 2017São José Dos Campos, São PauloI received a grant from the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), for the project “Quantifying the impacts of forest degradation in Amazon carbon stocks” (grant number: 313145/2016-4).My main research activities were to develop a methodology that uses high-spatial-resolution airborne LiDAR data to derive rates of forest growth and mortality based on Canopy Height Model; to quantify structural dynamics over degraded areas in the Amazon forest using multi-temporal LiDAR data; the evaluation of drivers of forest degradation (such as fires and selectively logging) and its effects in the carbon stock changes in tropical areas. -
Postdoctoral Research AssistantNational Institute For Space Research (Inpe) Apr 2016 - Jan 2017São José Dos Campos, São PauloI was part of the Green Ocean Amazon project (GOAmazon), funded jointly by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) (grant number: DE-SC0008383), FAPEAM, (grant number: 062.00570/2014) and FAPESP (grant number: 2015/23868-1) as a postdoctoral research fellow at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). My responsibility was to improve the understanding of landscape ecological processes by scaling observations from the stand level, where they can be more readily observed, to the landscape, where they can allow us to comprehend the “bigger picture” of landscape ecological patterns. My main research activities were: to lead research to improve the understanding of vegetation phenology of individual species at a field site in Tapajós National Forest using a hyperspectral tower-mounted camera; to evaluate how physiological changes in plant canopies affect spectral reflectance in specific wavelength bands; to use such observations to track ecosystem changes over time and in space contributing to unveil canopy phenology using remote sensing in Amazonian forests. -
