My name is Chia Yi Sheen, and I am a full-time NSman at SCDF.In my 3rd year of study at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, I was given the opportunity to do my internship at iHealthTech at NUS's Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Over there, I had a bountiful learning experience as honed my skills in cell culture and Western Blotting. I also picked up soft skills like time management and communication. My colleagues and supervisor played an instrumental role in this enriching journey with their patient guidance. Previously, I was a student at Kranji Secondary School and was a cadet in the National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) while I was studying there. NPCC taught me plenty about what it takes to be a leader and I learned valuable lessons on how to effectively communicate with my fellow cadets.I remain open-minded about my future career paths. I believe that opportunities arise at every step of my life journey. I think that by being receptive to every opportunity that is presented to me, coupled with the hunger for excellence, I will find the right career choice for me.

During my stint as an intern at iHealthTech, I worked with the BICEPS team and assisted in their research in the effect of Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (pEMF) on C2C12 murine muscle satellite stem cells. I was involved in the cell culture process of both the myoblast and myotube cells, and also downstream experiments investigating the protein abundance of the lysates using Western Blot. My learning was not just limited to technical skills, as I also learned important project and time management skills.Aside from lab work, the friendly researchers shared with me lots of their own experiences that led them to where they are now. They also gave me plenty of advice when I consulted them about possible career choices. With their help, I am now much more confident about my plans for my future education and career.
