I was first motivated to study Animal Science when I picked up an injured sparrow under a tree as a child. While I could not save it due to my lack of scientific knowledge, this experience sparked my desire to learn more about animals and how we can prevent them from being harmed. Growing up, I was fascinated by nature documentaries, and I particularly enjoyed seeing the intricacies of emperor penguin species. These experiences, alongside my relevant bachelors, have confirmed my desire to apply for MSc Animal Science.I am a lover of horses. In college, I gave a number of horse-related presentations, including on feed contamination, molecular mechanism of hair color inheritance, molecular markers in equinecrossbreeding, ET technologies, and horse-milk products making process. Nowadays, the Japanese racing industry breeds Thoroughbred racehorses with Sunday Silence pedigree - and Chinese breeders are keen to cross Japanese Thoroughbreds with local Chinese breeds. At the MSc level, I wish to explore if this will lead to a lack of genetic diversity in Thoroughbreds and impact the gene pool of China's native horses.Besides, animal welfare has always been a research area of great interest to me. I gave a presentation about Tilikum, a killer whale who was imprisoned by ocean parks, in my animal welfare course. From the miserable life of Tilikum, I can see thousands of innocent animals died because of animal shows. Many aquariums in China still have a large number of animal shows, I want to learn more about animal ecology to push for legislation to ban animal performances. At the same time, China is also facing a very serious problem: hydroelectric power plants are causing enormous, irreversible damage to river ecology. On July 21 of this year, the Chinese paddlefish, one of the world's largest freshwater fish species, was declared extinct by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. I want to study further on animal ecology to find feasible solutions for this dilemma and I wonder if we can bring these extinct species back to life through cloning.
