It requires knowledge in machine learning and proficiency in Python coding. It also requires her to quickly onboard to a large, complex scope of work, machine learning tooling that MLEs use, and data science tooling. Normally we’d expect a full-time colleague to take 1+ months to get familiar with the context and tooling. Yifan quickly grasped the materials on the onboarding guide and went through posts and guidelines by herself and unblocked herself when needed. She finished her first task within the first two weeks of her internship and made a well-written post that generated lots of interest. She maintained such high performance throughout the internship. I did not need to handhold her since week 3, as she already had developed opinions on how to proceed by then. * Great technical skills: Yifan demonstrated proficiency in Python coding, SQL, and deep understanding in machine learning. She wrote a reproduceable Python notebook with highly efficient functions to generate helpful results and visuals. Her notebook was well documented and has been re-used by other teams during and after her internship. I have been given great feedback about Yifan from the Eng team that her analyses were very clear and gave specific modeling recommendations. She went beyond to propose useful metrics which helps a lot with our ML work planning. * Great communication skills: Throughout the internship Yifan always communicated effectively, both in terms of oral communication and written communication. During our meetings and the meetings with cross-functional teams, Yifan always articulated technical information in a clear and detailed manner. Her outputs were well written and to-the-point, with feasible and actionable recommendations. Her presentations were clear and visually appealing. She also proactively reached out to colleagues beyond the immediate product teams, to learn from them and discuss how her work could be helpful for them. * Leadership: Yifan went above and beyond and extent her work to other product areas with similar challenges. She led meetings with other product teams and helped their teams’ data scientists learn about her work and use her reproduceable notebook. By the end of the internship, Yifan’s work was significantly more in depth and breadth than anticipated in product plan. We were so pleased with her work and were proud of her growth in a short amount of time.
