What is an Application Engineer? Let’s say, for example, you are a company which manufactures high end microscopes. These microscopes can be used for a vast range of applications such as biology research, industry, medical etc. Each one of these applications requires a unique modification to the microscope and unique accessories. The job of the application engineer is bridging the requirements and specs of the client with production and development. It is a skill which requires a deep technical understanding of the product as to what extent it can be modified, ability of discussing with the R&D new solutions, having an understanding of manufacturing costs and lead time, excellent inter-personal relations and the ability to represent the company, negotiate and close deals.Products which I sold include different types of microscopes, spectrometers and optical components. The application they were used for include a very large range of applications in the industrial, medical and the many fields of research. My experience includes acting as the direct sales person, negotiating and closing deals.
