Profile bio

About Yash Vyas

Can we make robots operate naturally in the real world and add value like humans do? How can we get inspiration from the natural world to build reliable and versatile robots? My research aims to synthesize mechanical design and control approaches to build robotic devices that can operate with more precision, speed and robustness. I believe this is the next step to make robots that can reach human-level performance and efficiency. I'm exploring balanced robotic manipulators as my application, and want to use my research approach in other areas, such as mobile manipulation.Curent I'm doing a PhD at the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Padova, funded by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie EU CoFund scholarship. I have a Master's in Robotics, Systems and Control from ETH Zürich, and a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Arts double degree from the Australian National University majoring in Mechatronics and Chinese. I also gained industry experience in the Qantas Airways Graduate Program, where I rotated in a variety of IT teams.I bring a wide variety of skills and experience from my academic and industry experience, such as robot perception, state estimation and mapping, deep learning, navigation, embedded systems, and data science. I also have leadership, public speaking and management experience from serving in a variety of professional and volunteer roles. My prior research projects include Physical-Human Robot Interaction with Aerial Robots, Path Planning for UAVs, SLAM, Deep Learning for Object Detection, and Augmented Reality. This gives me a broad holistic undertanding on the design and implementation of robotic systems. Give me a real world problem, and I can find the best solution!I am passionate about making STEM education accessible to all, in order to unlock the latent potential that can progress humanity. I started an educational outreach Program for underprivileged and regional high school students in Australia, with support and funding from the Australian National University. I was awarded the ANU Tillyard Prize which is given to exceptional undergraduates for my contribution to education and other causes.Apart from my professional career, I have dedicated myself to the study of Indian Classical Music. I perform regularly across numerous countries and also volunteer with cultural organisations that promote arts and culture.

Listed skills include Team Leadership, Debate, Engineering, Indian Classical Music, and 24 others.
