Cellvation BV upcycles toilet paper from waste water treatment plants to high grade cellulose material Recell®, which is suitable for all kind of markets. The company is a joint venture of KNN Cellulose BV and Cirtec BV.​By recovering the cellulose, Cellvation reduces the WWTP cost: lowering amounts of sludge produced and aeration energy used and increasing the wastewater treatment plants overall capacity. On top of that the produced resource cellulose represents an economic value. This way the Cellvation concept creates both economical and environmental value for all stakeholders involved.

Onder andere betrokken bij het VAZENA (Van Zeefgoed Naar Asfalt) project, waarbij cellulose, uit wc-papier, is teruggewonnen en opgewerkt tot een marktconform product voor de civiele sector. In dit project is een fietspad aangelegd, waarbij het teruggewonnen cellulose gebruikt is als afdruipremmer.Verantwoordelijk voor het fermentatieproces voor het produceren van vluchtige vetzuren (VFA's, zoals azijnzuur, propionzuur, boterzuur, etc). Deze VFA's zijn zeer geschikte platformchemicaliën voor diverse sectoren (van kunststoffen, bindmiddelen, coatings en verven tot cosmetica en voedingsmiddelen). Onder andere betrokken bij het PHARIO project, waarbij het bioplastic PHA uit afvalwater werd geproduceerd.Verantwoordelijk voor de acquisitie en contacten met bedrijven over het verwaarden van de aanwezige reststromen. Er wordt gezocht naar de meest hoogwaardige afzetroute voor de reststroom, waardoor dit zowel biobased als economisch een meerwaarde heeft voor het bedrijf.

Werkzaam aan het CADoS project. Het doel van dit project is om het cellulose uit het afvalwater te verwijderen met behulp van een fijnzeef bij de Waterzuivering in Ulrum. Dit cellulose wordt gebruikt voor de ontwatering van het slib van de RWZI in Ulrum. Dit CADoS project is de winnaar van de Water Innovatieprijs 2014.

In the last decades polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) has attracted much interest in biotechnology. PHA has similar properties as conventional plastics, with the additional property of PHA being biodegradable. The Cella™ technology combines the production of a PHA storing biomass that naturally occurs in wastewater treatment plants with biological nitrogen removal. The objective of this research was to evaluate the nitrogen removal capacity in the Cella™ technology both in terms of nitrification and denitrification. The rates of the nitrification and the denitrification were observed in the pilot installation at the wastewater treatment plant of the Wetterskip Fryslân in Leeuwarden.

Het ontwikkelen van een semi-continu fermentatie voor het produceren van melkzuurbacteriën. Momenteel worden de melkzuurbacteriën geproduceerde volgens een batch fermentatie. Bezig met het fermenteren op kleine schaal en het berekenen naar grote schaal. Momenteel wordt S. thermophilus geproduceerd d.m.v. een batch fermentatie. Mogelijk is er een ander proces voor de fermentatie van S. thermophilus, waardoor de fermentatie sneller en goedkoper kan verlopen. Er wordt onderzocht of een semi-continu fermentatie voor de productie van S. thermophilus kan worden ontwikkeld.

Een afvalstroom van een Thiopaq reactor bevat biozwavel. Deze biozwavel is goed te gebruiken als meststof en/of als fungicide. Hiervoor moet de biozwavel worden bewerkt. In dit project is uitgebreid onderzocht hoe van een afvalstroom met biozwavel een goed bruikbare meststof kan worden geproduceerd.
