The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals provide a recognised framework for wider impact, allowing research institutions worldwide to demonstrate the relevance of their output to societal challenges. By committing to the SDGs Higher Education Institutions can ultimately raise stakelders trust in them, as the framework provides a good way of articulating strategic focus. Established in 1831, the British Science Association (BSA) is a charity whose vision is a world where science is at the heart of our culture and society. BSA organises major initiatives across the UK, including British Science Week; the British Science Festival; regional and local events through our network of Branches; the CREST Awards, and other programmes for young people in schools and colleges. We run specific activities and training for professional science communicators; we undertake research and policy work; and we seek to influence and collaborate with stakeholders including policy makers and opinion formers, leaders from across different sectors of business, industry and public life.The Volunteer Marketing and Communications Officer's role is paramount in establishing relationships with external organizations who can facilitate event promotion locally. Among other responsibilities related to social media presence, the Marketing and Communications Officer should liaise with event organisers and help them with the design of promotional materials and related content.

The aim of online mentorship is to provide student-centric information and advice to prospective, current and new students of University of Glasgow via email. Additional mentor duties include representing the university on external forums such as The Student Room, and taking part in market research as a student panel member.

The Brand Ambassador is actively involved in the TEDxUniversityofGlasgowSalon events planning (from event ideas brainstorming, to making sure that venues are booked, etc.), as well as the TEDxUniversityofGlasgow 2016/2017 Conference Launch Party. The Brand Ambassador is helping the TEDx team to raise awareness and promote the society among students on campus through public involvement, and also gives creative ideas for marketing strategies and Salon events that can be implemented by the team.

Being in my final year as Microbiology student in the University of Glasgow, I have gained valuable laboratory skills during the course of my Honours Project, supervised by Dr. Gillian Douce. The main focus of my work in the lab was to successfully isolate Clostridium difficile strains from environmental samples and culture them in the lab choosing the optimal growing conditions, to perform 16S PCR reactions to identify the relationship between isolates and to further analyze their toxigenic properties.

Screening biting vectors for avian malariaBiting midges, anopheles mosquitos and black flies are all considered potential vectors of various infectious diseases in wildlife, including avian malaria. The apicomplexan blood parasites associated with it, namely - Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon are closely related genetically, which allows simultaneous studies of species from the three genera. Effective molecular methods, such as nested PCR assay, were used to estimate the avian malaria parasite prevalence in Scottish midge population, as previous studies indicate high infectious rate in breeding birds at SCENE (The Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment).

Glasgow Marrow is a student run branch of Anthony Nolan, which recruits potential lifesavers onto their stem cell register. But their fundraising efforts are also crucial. The generous people who support Anthony Nolan enable them to cover the expenses for growing the stem cells register, funding ground-breaking research into improving survival rates and the quality of life for patients post-transplant, and of course - raise awareness amoung the target groups.Becoming a Publicity Representative, was an outstanding opportunity to reveal my potential and put my personal skills into practise.As soon as I got the role in Glasgow Marrow's committee, I started planning my first awareness/fundraising campaign, with the aim of keeping the community attentive to the real struggles people with blood cancer are facing. The highlight was that every single one of us can become a hero by joining the stem cell register. The campaign called "It is written on our palms"​ was a success - in terms of number of people involved and publicity our cause has gained. There was a rapid response to our appeal from abroad (people from more than 13 countries helped me to achive my personal challenge). In addition, at the national Marrow AGM our committee was praised for the success of the campaign launched during the summer.As a Publicity Rep, I have also gained some experience in planning and managing live fundraising events. '​'Glasgow Marrow presents: All That Jazz" was a very special charity concert, with some really talented performers from GU Jazz Society. Groove City Radio promoted our event as well.Finally, having the chance to design some promotional materials such as posters, flyers and stickers allowed me to use my artistic skills, and apply them to an area other than my hobbies.
