The University of Pennsylvania Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PennPREP) offers a one-to-two-year research experience for students who have completed their bachelor’s degree, are interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in the biomedical sciences, and would benefit from protected time to develop additional skills research. The program provides a full time research experience in a biomedical science discipline, along with preparation for applying to and succeeding in graduate school.

OUR Student Ambassadors are a group of undergraduate researchers at UNC who work with the Office for Undergraduate Research to promote a culture of research on this campus. As Student Ambassadors, we are available for contact for anyone who may need it.

As a UNC ResNET employee, I work with clients to troubleshoot technical issues, and help them to resolve issues on their own. I specifically work in areas involving customer service, project management, training, and working within a defined workflow. I also have acquired a host of technical skills within this role, including working with computer operating systems (Windows, Mac), educational software applications, malware removal, printer functionality, digital marketing, technical writing, and gaming technology.

"The Eve Carson Scholarship was established in 2008 to celebrate junior-year students who have exhibited passion and transformative growth since matriculation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.As the living legacy of former Student Body President Eve Carson, the scholarship fulfills the vision for a student-run merit scholarship she included in her platform."Through this opportunity, I was able to host my own scholarship for rising college first years from underrepresented backgrounds who would major in STEM. As someone who grew up with a deficit in people that looked like me in the field I wished to enter, I knew that I had to become the representation that I wished to see in order to help propagate the next generation of scientists after me in my community. I’ve always wanted to give back to the community that sacrificed so much for me to succeed, and I knew this scholarship was exactly how I could do it. I hope to continue this scholarship in the future. I was able to provide two $500 textbook scholarships to two very worth individuals, and I hope that this can help propel them into their journey in STEM.

Thurston-Bowles Center for Alcohol Research: My primary research focuses on determining the role of GABA-ergic CRF neurons in the BNST, and how it alters fear-learning. Using chemogentics for inhibition, manual knockout of CRF in the BNST in mice models allows us to observe differences in fear conditioning behavior after chronic intermittent ethanol (CIE) exposure. Fear response is measured through behavioral scoring of freezing response in the mice models. I have gained skills in mice handling, mice perfusion, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, behavioral scoring in mice models, brain slicing and mounting, brain imaging, and statistical analysis.

Selected to participate in the MSU-ASPET Pharmacology & Toxicology SURF program at Michigan State University. - Worked under Dr. Bryan Copple to identify the mechanism by which pro-fibrotic peritoneal macrophages transform into anti-fibrotic macrophages. Mechanism was implicated specifically in liver fibrosis - used PCR to test for gene expression in drug treated macrophages that were extracted from mice models. Drugs were identified using high-throughput drug screening and previously confirmed as positive hits. Our data was used to predict possible therapies for treating liver fibrosis.- Developed skills in RNA isolation and purification, cell extraction and culturing and PCR- Able to develop own independent hypothesis, and run several experiments to quantify my results

Provided academic support for students taking Organic Chemistry II (CHEM 262: Introduction to Organic Chemistry II) for the Spring 2021 semester. Held weekly review sessions and aided in holding both exam review sessions and the final exam review session. Was a continued resource for students outside of class to ensure the success of students in the class.

As a summer research student in this program, I worked in Dr. Namandjé Bumpus' lab under the mentorship of Josh Yu, where I analyzed metabolomic profiles of patients diagnosed with COVID-19. I used online statistical software to identify potential biomarkers implicated in the virus, and further statistical analysis to determine which features/metabolites were proficient as distinguishing identifiers. I gained skills in Mass Spectroscopy, the field of Metabolomics, using MetaboAnalyst, and using Proteome Discoverer 2.4."The Summer Internship Program (SIP) provides experience in research laboratories to students of diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented minority students, students from economically disadvantaged and underserved backgrounds and students with disabilities that have completed one - two or more years of college. The purpose of this exposure to biomedical and/or public health research is to encourage students to consider careers in science, medicine and public health."
