I started my healthcare career in laboratory medicine in 1997 as a Medical LaboratoryTechnician, graduating from South Arkansas Community College with an Associates Degree of Applied Science in Medical LaboratoryTechnology. I would later return to school to become a Medical Laboratory Scientist after graduating from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences with a Bachelors of Science in Laboratory Medicine. Most of my career has been spent as a generalist on the bench but the last 4 years I have been in management. I can honestly say that I enjoy it. Management is challenging but i needed that because I had hit a place in my career where lab had become monotonous and mundane. I wanted to know more about the behind the scenes parts of lab, the business side, the decision making, and what kind of regulations and data drove the decision making. I am still working on the people aspect of it but I will get better at that as my management style continues to develop and evolve. Managing people is a very challenging job because you are more than just their supervisor at times, especially in smaller lab/hospital settings. Lastly, I hope to return to Western Governors University soon to finish my Masters of Business in Healthcare Management. Then who knows after that???
