The Zentangle Method, created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. These patterns are called tangles. As you draw, you explore the invitation to practice gratitude, be present, slow down, increase your focus and enjoy creating!I started practicing this contemplative art form in 2017 and enjoy sharing its many benefits with others through small group classes, staff development sessions, and with local community groups. As a certified teacher, I was able to launch my business, PAZ: Pause and Zentangle. PAZ, in Spanish, means peace and that is what I feel when I draw (and it turned out to be a great acronym as well)!

TRIO Upward Bound supports the educational journeys of students from first-generation and low income backgrounds as they prepare for access to and completion of a post-secondary degree. During the program's six week summer session, students enroll in academic, elective and college and career exploratory classes. As an instructor with the 2023 session, I designed, taught and evaluated the Pause and Zentangle elective art class for 12 students (a first time offering) and also designed, taught and evaluated the Senior Access to College and Career Exploration class for 18 students. In both roles, establishing rapport and nurturing a positive class community were fundamental as was actively supporting students' progress towards their stated goals.

Exploring one's strengths and interests is very much a process and in this role, I partnered with students as they practiced asking questions and listened to their lives. Encouraging and connecting students to the resources that further helped them discern their next best steps was a highlight of my time at the Boerigter Center for Calling and Career. Providing support in the areas of assessment interpretation, resume development, mock interviews, academic advising and teaching a First Year Seminar course on Contemplative Photography were also among my responsibilities.

It was a tremendous honor to lead, build relationships with and support first year students in their transition to college through this living and learning experience. During this season, my responsibilities included advising, teaching, supervising, supporting first generation students, coordinating program events, collaborating with faculty from different disciplines, building partnerships with campus offices and recruiting.

TRIO works! The commitment of Upward Bound students to progress towards high school graduation and admission to college is inspiring! My contributions included assisting with all aspects of the college admission process, program planning, coordinating tutoring sessions and related processes, supervising academic year and summer student staff, coordinating the summer residential experience and supporting parents in understanding the college experience.

This office is now known as the Center for Diversity and Inclusion. Highlights of this season included supporting traditionally underrepresented students in their transition to college, developing programming, collaborating with campus partners, advising, mentoring and promoting cultural awareness and humility among the general student body.

It was a privilege to develop rapport and establish relationships with students and their families as they became familiar with Hope College. My responsibilities included recruiting, conducting interviews, leading campus tours, attending college fairs, connecting with high school counselors and maintaining regular contact with prospective students.

As a new professional, I intentionally sought to be in diverse school setting such as Holland Public Schools. I taught 8th and 9th grade English and my responsibilities included course development, lesson planning, teaching, connecting with parents, and evaluating.
