Developed 2 real-time MPC-based thermal management algorithms for Hyundai’s next generation experimental EV, which achieved 5~9% energy savings in HVAC only mode, and 15~30% energy savings in HVAC and battery cooling mode. The prediction models show heat exchanger RMSE within 3~10%, and battery and coolant temperature RMSE of 0.41℃ and 0.35℃ compared with high-fidelity Simulink benchmarks.Applied LTV-MPC structures (qpOASES) and approximated (data-driven) value functions to algorithms to realize 1ms calculations.Analyzed and identified the drawbacks of high-fidelity models from Hyundai, motivating the redesign of the high-fidelity models.Delivered one research presentation at a national conference and 3 technical reports, which secured the following year’s funding and collaborations with Hyundai Motor Inc.

Led the MPC-based thermal management research project for the electric propulsion systems on Hyundai IONIQ 5. Scheduled discussions and convinced team members for an algorithm reconstruction and developed real-time MPC-based thermal management algorithms as well as a Simulink-GT co-simulation framework. Validated a GT-suite thermal model of IONIQ 5 against data acquired from dyno tests using ETAS-INCA and data from A2MAC1. Planned vehicle instrument layout for real-vehicle algorithm evaluations. Prepared technical reports for collaborations with Hyundai research/production engineers in South Korea and advanced the progress of productized implementation.Participated in the development of a high-fidelity Simscape thermal model of IONIQ 5, including the HVAC system and the coolant circuit (battery and power electronics). Provided knowledge of thermodynamics and refrigerant systems to identify the root causes of model errors and accelerated the progress of the model development.Delivered a technical paper on the MPC algorithm which was presented in Hyundai Motor Company’s internal conference.

Identified a 6kHz whining noise on the model ES8 by order and spectrum analysis in Siemens LMS Test Lab. Improved the gear and housing structures using CATIA and Ansys to reduce noise, which is confirmed by acoustic tests on dynos.
