About Tim J.

I’m a Swiss Army Knife of Product Design with 20+ years of: UX and UI designing & optimising, analysing, user researching, strategising, mentoring, copywriting, and more. I thrive not only on the challenge of delivering meaningful design solutions that customers love and drive business growth, but also help others discover the importance of listening to users feedback and get excited about it too!I value being curious, being respectful, being efficient, having a laugh, and cutting through the fluff to get stuff done!My big loves are:1) Listening to users and synthesising their feedback to **really** understand their goals/motivations/problems of using the product.2) Embracing the mantra 'Don't make me think!' - Distilling complex problems into amazing solutions that are simple and easy to understand.3) Designing and testing rationalised hypothesis to help understand product sensitivity points to drive product growth, through small UX and product enhancements (it's not always about flash new features!)4) Using the power of UI and UX design to influence user behaviour <<< I promise only to use for good ;-)5) Optimising the s#!t out of onboarding flows, checkouts, interfaces, interactions, copy etc.6) Helping to discover business opportunities / product roadmapping though the combo of user research and data analysis. My skills include but are not limited to:- Simplifying complexity- Dealing with ambiguity- Zooming between the bigger picture and the weeds - Deep diving into understanding user problems and pain points- Synthesising qualitative vs quantitative data- Experimentation such as A/B testing - Ideation and prototyping- Requirements gathering & Analysis- Persuasive design patterns - Process optimisation - Storyboarding user narratives / creating customer journey maps- Collaborating with stakeholders both technical and non-technical minded- Balancing the needs of the business and user - User research, such as contextual interviews- Running user tests with end users- Copywriting, specifically for modern interfaces- Data analysis for product direction - iOS design- Art Direction- Mentoring junior designers- Information architecture- Graphic design, typography, and Illustration- SEO (front end)- Vintage bicycle restoration- Prop making

    Founder Of The Sniff.Co.Nz
    The Sniff Jan 2010 - Jul 2011
    Wellington, Wellington Region, New Zealand
This was an experimental project to learn practically about SEO, Adwords and GA and hopefully make some 'pocket money' at the same time.TheSniff was built in the heyday of daily deal sites (think 1-day, Groupon etc) to leverage off their popularity at the time. Technically it was quite simple - just a list of links/logos to the deal sites in NZ (and a few profiles etc on them), however it was highly optimised for Google Organic Search for the purpose of monetisation through Adwords. In a nutshell... search 'daily deals' in NZ and we'd come up in the top 2 rankings, above all the real daily deal sites. Success! At it's peak it was doing very well and required very little time to make weekly edits. It was built on Wordpress, which gave a non dev person like me the ability to knock something up quickly and easily and maintain it securely and effortlessly.
  • Bookgoblin.Co.Nz
    Co-Founder & Designer
    Bookgoblin.Co.Nz Jan 2003 - Jan 2010
    Wellington, Wellington Region, New Zealand
Co-ower, designer, and half the brains behind the used textbook site Bookgiblin.co.nz.It was a custom designed and developed, 'buy and sell' site designed to help students (which we were at the time too) combat the ridiculous high prices of new and used textbooks. The university ran student bookshops (which bought used textbooks off students for which we thought were unreasonable prices) hated us as we gave students the ability to buy cheaper and receive more money for their textbooks. It was unique to other sites in that students could view all the textbooks another student had and tick all the ones they were intersted in which would send an automatic email. Students would then organise to meet up and do the deal offline (textbooks were more often than not specific to local universities, thus less of a requirement to shipping ). Because we encouraged local trade we had close to zero 'issues' in trades over the 10 plus years of being online. It was quite successful (sans monetising it!) and at it's peaks we had over 20,000 users and on average 100's of textbooks listed con-currently.We ran 'gorilla' marketing campaigns in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin.Though it made little money, (and admittedly it wasn't the primary goal of this) it was a fun experience and good to know that it helped 1000s of Kiwi students.
