PeopleSet aimed to make it easier to work with local publications so that you could talk to as many communities as possible via old forms of media like local newspapers.That route was a swing and a miss. Ultimately pivoted into Bigtent Creative. Same end goal, but complete 180 on the tactics - upcoming forms of media vs old ones.

Beacon was intended deliver an innovative solution in the politics/ advocacy space. I was brought in by the former CEO and her investors to examine monetization options when cash was at a low point. Our first action was to reduce burn by over 50%. After reviewing its commercial prospects, we then decided to shutter Beacon and donate its assets to continue its mission as a non-profit.

Came in at behest of the board with 2 days' notice when the founder/CEO of the company received a federal prison sentence. The company had missed payroll. Suppliers were owed money. Customers needed product delivered. There was negative money in all the bank accounts.In a 3 month period I worked with the remaining team members to: - Close $2.5M in sales - Renegotiate supplier contracts - Renegotiate customer delivery and payment schedules - Restructure the engineering team - Get caught up on payroll - Get positive balances in the bank accounts - Build a working sales motion including recruiting a strong salesperson - Hand off the organization to longer-term leadership

Jake Roy Pillar is a financial services technology consultancy that specializes in technology solutions for hedge funds, fund managers and others in the financial services.Aardvarkium, a company I had previously founded, merged with JRP and my staff expanded and began to use their skills to benefit both our previous clients and JRP's sophisticated clientele. My role at JRP is versatile, being a manager, a technical salesperson, and also a senior software engineer. I led a team which built a Data Warehouse application that is now relied upon by several multibillion dollar hedge funds. Additionally, I managed another team that provided regular consulting service and support to over a dozen hedge fund clients. All the while I made sure to keep legacy clients with Ruby on Rails applications happy -- and also take on new business referals from them. I'm most proud about my successful sales efforts allowing my team to double its original size, create jobs and grow Jake Roy Pillar as a whole.

Aardvarkium was an internet applications consulting company that I founded based out of New York City. We focused primarily on Ruby on Rails development and consulting, and also provided IT consulting services to a variety of clients based throughout the US.Our work included building as well as re-making e-commerce web sites for well-known brands, as well as customized order and content management systems for growing companies. On the IT side, we provided managed support services for clients in the real estate and hospitality sector in New York City, as well as regular work for a major research university. After developing some excellent client relationships and building a great team, I sold the company to Jake Roy Pillar in May 2012. JRP continues to serve Aardvarkium's clients in addition to its own which are focused in the financial services sector.

Ryan Associates was the leading implementation and support company for the Advent Geneva accounting system -- used by a majority of larger ($2B+) hedge funds. I started as employee number six at Ryan Associates, when it only serviced a handful of clients. I worked as a software developer, writing custom accounting applications for clients, and also helped with sales and business development. Ryan Associates quickly became very successful -- winning over 50% of the total Advent Geneva implementation contracts during my tenure there. As the company expanded to more than triple its original size I helped recruit, train and manage new employees while also assisting in developing new business. I also continued to work on various software development tasks, especially in C#, Java and Geneva RSL.

Assisted in the development and deployment of the online application for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards division of Scholastic Corporation.The project was both behind schedule and over budget when I joined. Seeing this, I worked to coordinate interests between different groups on the project, and help iron out differences. Soon we were able to get the project under control and roll the system in a timely fashion out to over fifty regional affiliates.

A Playful World was a fair-trade importing company that sourced toys from women's cooperatives across Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Peru for distribution across high-end toy stores across Canada and the US. Raised seed capital and recruited a replacement CEO after reaching profitability.

Built a profitable 15 person household moving company as a personal challenge to win a bet with a friend around who could build the most profitable company in a city they'd never been to before, that required skills they did not have before. I would not do something like this today, but it made sense to me when I was 21. Given that I did not know how to move anything, and I did not have a driver's license, we agreed that me starting a moving company would be compliant with the terms of this bet.The key insight around starting this company and making it profitable was that there was a high demand for household movers on Craigslist and none of the existing players in that market had a strong web presence, nor were they particularly responsive to emails and phonecalls. Built an attractive website, posted on Craigslist, and then set up a central dispatcher who would respond to emails/phonecalls, and hired movers on an as-needed basis to quickly scale this business to several hundred moves within the 7-month period that I ran it.

Designed a political meme and then built a 100+ person nation-wide network of street vendors/ political activists who sold over 50k t-shirts, buttons, and other merchandise with its image while registering over 5k people to vote. Each and every member of our diverse team (over 50% female, over 50% people of color) made over $15/ hour while doing this work.This was literally the most popular t-shirt of the 2004 election cycle.

Built a profitable 12 person real estate brokerage focused on rentals in NYC. We were one of the first agencies to focus on putting ads on Craigslist rather than buying paid ads in newspapers. Another thing that distinguished us was that rather than fighting other agencies for listings, we worked exclusively with large buildings that were paying commissions, assigned agents to be in relevant areas near those buildings, and had a dispatcher answering calls from clients routing them to the agent closest to the property they were interested. This cut out travel time for our agents and meant that agents did not have to pay for their own listings - resulting in higher profits for agents and our brokerage.
