Founder CeoSeattle Supermovers Feb 2005 - Aug 2005Built a profitable 15 person household moving company as a personal challenge to win a bet with a friend around who could build the most profitable company in a city they'd never been to before, that required skills they did not have before. I would not do something like this today, but it made sense to me when I was 21. Given that I did not know how to move anything, and I did not have a driver's license, we agreed that me starting a moving company would be compliant with the terms of this bet.The key insight around starting this company and making it profitable was that there was a high demand for household movers on Craigslist and none of the existing players in that market had a strong web presence, nor were they particularly responsive to emails and phonecalls. Built an attractive website, posted on Craigslist, and then set up a central dispatcher who would respond to emails/phonecalls, and hired movers on an as-needed basis to quickly scale this business to several hundred moves within the 7-month period that I ran it.

We were one of the first agencies to focus on putting ads on Craigslist rather than buying paid ads in newspapers. Another thing that distinguished us was that rather than fighting other agencies for listings, we worked exclusively with large buildings that were paying commissions, assigned agents to be in relevant areas near those buildings, and had a dispatcher answering calls from clients routing them to the agent closest to the property they were interested. This cut out travel time for our agents and meant that agents did not have to pay for their own listings - resulting in higher profits for agents and our brokerage.
