    Responsibilities:  Conduct lab-scale fermentation to optimize ethanol production;  Metabolic engineer Clostridium thermocellum to produce ethanol directly from cellulosic substrates;  I have developed a genetic modification platform for strain development. Achievements:  I have broken the record of ethanol titer produced by Clostridium thermocellum on cellulose by careful fermentation and culture optimization; I have successfully made Clostridium thermocellum produce theoretical yield of ethanol by metabolic engineering and synthetic biology;  I analyzed “Omics” data of C. thermocellum to precisely predict the function of cells in different conditions by using systems biological engineering tools.

    Responsibilities:  Conduct lab-scale fermentation to optimize bio-based product yields;  Engineer a cellulolytic bacterium to produce next-generation biofuels;  Develop the next-generation sequencing;  Build a novel genetic modification platform for microorganisms. Achievements:  I optimized fermentation parameters to achieve high yield of butyric acid; I was the first one in the world to do genetic modifications in Thermobifida fusca;  I identified the key genes for regulating cellulase productions in T. fusca by the next-generation sequencing technology;  I engineered T. fusca to produce 1-propanol directly from un-treated corn stover by metabolic engineering and bioinformatics;  I identified key enzymes for catalyzing target chemicals and determined the functions of these enzymes.
