Megawatt-Class Integrated Motor Drive for Aircraft Propulsion – Ongoing (Sponsored by Industrial Partner)• Designed and built a high specific power megawatt-class integrated motor drive technology demonstrator as part of a multidisciplinary team (including 2 other doctoral candidates and 7 MIT faculty members)• Developed an electric machine design and co-optimization algorithm which maximizes specific power through assessment of the machine’s electromagnetic, structural, and thermal performance limits• Identified key enabling technologies and machine architectures for high specific power, including opportunities for mechanical integration with the turbomachine components in a jet engine• Proposed a megawatt-class conceptual electric machine design with specific power exceeding NASA’s 2030 targets for turbo-electric propulsion, with preliminary FEA and CFD computations supporting its feasibility• Conducted the preliminary and detailed design of the demonstrator’s mechanical and thermal subsystems, including producing mechanical drawings for component fabrication• Identified key project risks and formulated risk mitigation plans, including non-destructive experimental validation of the thermal and mechanical subsystemsD8 Fuel Burn Uncertainty Estimate & BLI Propulsor Loss Modeling (Sponsored by NASA)• Demonstrated the fuel burn benefit of the D8 conceptual aircraft and its robustness to technology assumptions and uncertainties in design parameters• Developed a conceptual model framework for Boundary Layer Ingesting (BLI) propulsor losses, incorporating blade profile losses in incompressible flow
