Responsibility: Development of fermentation processes, operation of a pilot bio-ethanol plant, and development of yeast strains by mutation or genetic recombination. • Developed a new process to ferment the pretreated rice straw by sequence application of P. stipitis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (published in 2011).• Increased the fermentation efficiency by 30% through a fermentation process innovation to overcome the effect of acetic acid on the ethanol production.• Participated the design of a pilot ethanol production plant and lead the operation of fermentation process.• Optimized the fermentation processes to better align with multiple pretreatment process; scaled up, and integrated both of them into the pilot plant.• Designed and built up a continuous biomass pretreatment process (pretreated by lime and neutralize by CO2) and optimized the operation parameters.• Customized the fermentation process to different biomass and optimized the enzyme cocktails in SSF.• Screened the mutants to improve the fermentation of xylose and cellobiose (published in 2012).• Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of rice straw by recombined Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
