Creating a social network site and an online music application• Achieved the following functions: signup process, login form, logout facility, public and privatemessages, populated the site with JavaScript and CSS3, imported user profiles to SQL Server.• Developed "BeatBox Drum" application capable of saving, restoring, sending, receiving, loading and playing drum patterns with JavaSound API, Swing GUI, networking, multi-threading and I/O.• Implemented a client-server chat room using multi-threading, initiated a work queue thread for messages handling, costumed GUI that allows users to type in text and displays the ongoing dialog.

Algorithm design, implementation optimization and application• Designed an algorithm for tectonic strain analysis by obtaining the sharpest estimate of gradienttensor as possible; wrote 3,000 lines of Fortran codes to deal with various parameters.• Implemented and optimized an inversion algorithm by a python package containing 33 programs to analyze 500,000 seismograms recorded by 1,800 seismic stations from 800 earthquakes.• Performed XML scripts to request daily earthquake data automatically, accomplished a searching algorithm to locate bad data, parallelized the programs to efficiently process large size data.

I am working on a novel full waveform inversion technique - wave gradiometry, using data from dense array of geophones or seismic stations to infer high resolution subsurface velocity structure.Workflow1: Process raw seismograms of selected earthquakes to get amplitudes and ground velocity in the radial and vertical directions; collect phase travel time and peak amplitude data automatically.2: Shift waveforms to diminish arrival time lag between master station and supporting stations; evaluate spatial gradient of displacement field for each station within one subarray.3: Compute dynamical phase velocity, back azimuth, radiation pattern, geometrical spreading for all stations by solving two unknown coefficients iteratively with least square inversion.4: Estimate gradient and Laplacian of logarithmic amplitude, find the amplitude correction using Helmholtz equation, retrieve structural phase velocity and parameter variance5: Create synthetic waveforms using different packages for new technique benchmarking.6: Extract 3-D shear-wave velocity profile across the United States using joint inversion from receiver function and Rayleigh wave phase velocity.

The special curricula of both geochemistry and geophysics with credits totaling up to 171 armed me with a strong foundation of geochemistry, geophysics, mineralogy, mathematics, physics and computer Science for future study.Bachelor Thesis: Study Plasma Instabilities and Turbulence with the Delta-f Particle Simulation Method - Assumed the value of particle mass, electric quantity and temperature to be one.- Produced series of random arrays as basic particle parameters through IDL program, simulated Maxwell distribution function to calculate particle velocity, Bohm-Gross frequency, Langmuir frequency and weighting,respectively.- Adopted Runge-Kutta method to divide the simulation into two steps controlled by Delta factor.- Computed particle density, potential, position and entropy, respectively through combination grid method.- Converted the results into comparison function; generated curve graphs with six parameter groups to compare computational efficiency, physical noise and simulation accuracy between Delta-f method and Full-f method.
